Elusive solutions
If you have a soil-dwelling insect problem, the best bet for you is Orcon's top-selling Nematodes. These worms, though invisible to the naked eye, are an excellent means of crop protection in either the home garden or commercial field. When I first bought my nematodes, I noticed within the week a serious reduction in pest signs. This satisfaction slowly vanished, however, after several nights of further consideration. As you can see in the picture, nematodes are not the prettiest animal to promote in the garden, and it soon became apparent to me that I had just loosed seven million of the creatures into my 10'x4' vegetable garden. As I spend a considerable portion of my time out of doors, I was suddenly living in Nematode Village, USA, grinding their non-segmented bodies between my toes, inhaling nematode bodies and excrement, and likely tracking them all over the house when I came inside. When I uprooted a head of lettuce from the garden one evening and prepared a salad, I brought the greens to my mouth and couldn't shake the feeling that tiny, swarming nematodes were frolicking about my gumline. This was the straw that broke the camel's back.

After some frantic researching, I decided that ladybugs would eliminate the nematode colony and solve everything that had gone wrong. The more the merrier, I said, and placed an order for Orcon's convenient 9000-count bundle. Well, you may gather where this is going, but it took Orcon lacewings to kill the ladybugs, and for the lacewings I bought 6 egg cases of Orcon praying mantids (an equivalent of 6000 young). When Orcon told me the best control of mantids was their top-selling nematode, I finally wised up. Like some sick version of a Looney Tunes episode, I was back where I started and no closer to eternally ridding my garden of pests.

If you know what you're getting into, I still appreciate the soil-dwelling insect control capabilities of the nematode, but users beware. Take a lesson from me and avoid Orcon's consumer scheme. Insects and parasites might be destructive to your cultigens, but as far as the independent planter is concerned they as a unit are a necessary evil with no easy solution. If you want the quick fix I was after, forget about it.

It's like a party in my skin
I was very disappointed with this product. It was quite a let down when, after seven days of edge-of-the-seat waiting (last time I go in for super saver shipping), the postman delivered not a large and wriggling sack of run-of-the-mill plant-parasitic nematodes, but rather one containing seven million or so specimens of Borneo cutaneous larva migrans (a.k.a. "Creeping Nematodes"). I don't know whether I got exactly seven million of them, but my doctor assures me that they are in fact the rare Borneo variant.

On the bright side, I got a tremendous bargain on so many specimens of such a rare parasite. And the course of treatment consists of just a few short months of Nematodicidal jellies and suppositories and a few potent sedatives to help me sleep through the otherwise unbearable itchiness caused as these little devils burrow around under my skin.

However, I'm reluctant to give these Nematodes any fewer than five stars. I might not like what they're doing, but they're doing a great job at it!

For better buys, I'd recommend the Greensense "Beneficial Nematodes" or the "Titicaca Pool Party" sized bag of candiru.

Great for my Lawn
I purchased a similar nematode package from another on-line gardening retailer. They were very effective for reducing the grub problem in my yard. Killing the grubs also helped to keep the skunks away, which is great because it took 2 weeks to get the smell off my German Shepherd. All-in-all, a great solution because I wanted to avoid pesticides -- my kids are young enough to do stupid things like eat dirt.

The idea of nematode worms might gross you out, but they are totally safe for humans and not nearly as visible as the picture suggests. In fact, human body temperature will kill the worms. They are used not only for crops, but extensively on golf courses and can be used in conjunction with many pesticides. Don't Do It!!
I bought 3 of these from Bed Bath and Beyond for around the same price as here and this was a complete waste of money.First,these are NOT silent.They give an annoying tick every few seconds.So if you have more than 1 plugged in at a time,its unbearable to be home with all the racket going on.Second,they don't work!I had a ant problem in my kitchen and these things didn't even make them flinch.I'll stick with sprays from now on.

Repeller ticks every 5 seconds, very annoying
I won't have the chance to find out if these work or not because the ticking is driving me crazy! It ticks about every 5 seconds. It is in my kitchen and I will have to unplug it to go to sleep, I can hear it all the way in my bedroom! Don't waste your money on this.

effective in Arizona for about 3 weeks...
I have about 2 of these in every room of my house. I wanted to over-do it rather than under because in addition to mice, I noticed I had problems with fleas and moths. For three weeks I couldn't find any of these three! And as the label warns, there is a possibility of stubborn pests getting used to the sound and returning. Which they have. My dog still has fleas, and the moths hang out by my kitchen light which is about 3 inches above one of these devices! An it is far from silent, a house guest could not sleep until he asked us to unplug one! It may not be "harmful" to pets, but my dog can certainly hear it and seems aggitated and irritated by the constant clicks. There are gnats in my back room that seem to enjoy the noise!?! They actually came around after I had these and weren't dissuaded at all by the super-sonic deterrent. The three stars were earned because it did seem to drive the mice around to the side of the house, and Sunbeam makes no claim to work through walls and around corners, so I felt it did what was promised with the mice, (although it did not solve my problem.)
