This slim, white-enameled metal buffet range, featuring two independently-controlled spiral burners, is the equivalent of half a stove top. The obvious places it would come in handy are dorm rooms, cabins, campsites, and workplaces that have no kitchen. But even in a home with a full equipped kitchen, there are times when the stove is overloaded, and that's where this durable, clean-lined buffet range pitches in.

A soapy cloth or sponge will get the unplugged unit clean; the coils tilt up for easy access to the catch areas underneath. The coils can be wiped down, too, once they're cool. But use nylon scrubbies; harsh abrasives and steel wool will damage the protective coating.

To "cure" the burners, turn each one on for the first time to the maximum setting for four minutes with no pot or pan on it. This hardens the protective coating on the spiral burners. And don't be alarmed if the burners smoke the first time they are turned on. It will burn off in a few minutes and it is not a defect. The buffet range measures 20 by 10-1/4 by 4-1/2 inches, including legs, handles and knobs. A Crummy Way to Cook
I bought this range and some pans a few months ago to augment my microwave and was quite disapponted with its performance. I only used it twice, and it burnt the food both times. Be warned - this thing is a waste of money, even if it is only $25. Specific complaints are as follows:

1.) Before the first use, you have to turn it to the highest setting for about 15 minutes to "cure" the metal of the burners. This involves burning off whatever plastic residue is left on them from the factory, and it produces a noxious, smoky fume that not only set off my smoke detector, but made me want to vomit as well.

2.) The knobs to adjust the burners are a joke. The settings are 1, 2, 3, 4, and FULL, but I couldn't distinguish any difference in the level of heat anywhere from 1 to 3. It took about 40 minutes to boil 3 quarts of cool water at the FULL setting, and another 15 or so to achieve a "full-rolling" boil.

3. Worse yet, the burners are only about 5" in diamater, which focuses all the heat in a very small spot at the bottom of your pan, virtually guaranteeing burnt food unless you stir constantly. Only high-quality cookware like Calphalon could do a really good job of diffusing the heat, and let's face it - if you can afford nice cookware like that (and have the space to store it), I doubt you have much need for a product like this in the first place.

For anyone who lives in a dorm, barracks, etc. these types of hot-plates are usually banned anyway (as they are often viewed as a fire hazard), so as an alternative I would recommend buying some high quality glass/ceramic bowls or dishes you could use to cook things in the microwave.
