Golden glows
These lights work great right out of the box. Their soft amber glow is a delight at dusk. They do not really light up a pathway, but rather provide a soft ambience to the immediate area. They are powered by Ni-Cad batteries that are only replaceable from the manufacturer for around $10. They should last around 1 1/2 to 2 years according to my experience.

Extensive research tells me...
...that these lights won't do for most people. I am in charge of replacing all the garden lights in my complex with solar ones, and so have been testing almost all solar lights in this price range (between $12-25 each). I purchased 16 of these lights and tested them over a week. Some were in direct sunlight, some weren't. The results are in, and it doesn't look good.<br /> I've found that the main ticket to decent solar lighting in this price range is having 3 volts worth of batteries, not 1.5. In the case of "AA-powered" lights, like these, that means 2 AA batteries. LEDs run off 3 volts, so the circuitry for lights with just 1 AA has to convert to 3 volts, really reducing run time and brightness.<br /> The best things about these specific lights are: 1) they are plastic, therefore no rusting, and 2) the AA battery is easy to replace. Any Ni-Cad battery will do - They came with 700mAh batteries which is better than most. The stands, though sectional, are better than others I tested, though not the best.<br /> My final thought: I've had much better luck, brightness and run-time with the lights I tested with 2 AAs vs. 1. Unless you want to step up to the $50/each range, I would stay away from this set and grab one that's a little more robust, though slightly more pricey. Oh, one more thing: I've pretty much found that solar lighting kits in this range that tout "2 LEDs" instead of just one are mostly gimmicks: There might be 2 LEDs, but they are each 1/2 the size of the 1 LED you normally find.

solar lights
these are great. i bought my first pair three years ago. they continue to work and look good. they don't make a really bright light but you can light the walkway or path with them. they serve as a beacon. they are well made and i have really enjoyed them. every year i buy a couple more. best part is the battery can be replaced if it gets tired.

Don't buy them!
I have 9 lights and 3 no longer light--even with new, recharged Ni-Cad solar light batteries. (They'll light for a few hours and then nothing until I bring in the batteries to charge them in a charger.) During the past 2 1/2 years, I've probably exchanged lights 6 times. I'm so fed up with these!

Accent lighting
This is my third year with 2 sets and they have proven to be a great buy. With normal care of annually cleaning exterior and reflecting surfaces they are still as bright as when new. The only problem I have had is with battery replacement. The original Sanyo N-700 aacl has proven impossible to locate. Other sanyo/ge rechargeables do not work and the intermatic-Malibu (a competitor of Brinkmann) brand AA rechargeable does not fit the battery compartment! Unfortunately Target employees have been unable to provide alternative info. Brinkmann customer service has been busy everytime I've tried to contact them. I love these lights
I recently purchased two sets of the hanging lights. They were easy to put in the ground and since it is summer, I had lights all night long right away. They are so soft and comforting when you look outside. I'm planning on getting a set for my daughter. They are super!

Poor Design Overall
I received two sets of these lights for mothers day. The rod that the lighting hangs off is screwed toghether in three separate pieces and is made of hollow, cheap metal that easily bends under pressure. The spike is even worse than the metal. I broke 3 of the 4 pushing them into the ground with my hands. Then I couldnt even get the spiike off to push them into the ground with just the rod. Overall the design of the lights is not worth the money invested and the lights.

Durable and beautiful
We got these solar lights as a housewarming gift, and they are fabulous!! They give off a soft, long-lasting light. Even with high winds, they stay securely on the hanger.

Great lanterns!
I got two last year, and just bought another two this year. THey add just the right style and just enough light to guide--all without adding a penny onto the electric bill. (Something to note: If they register strong light, they can tend not to trigger on, so with something such as a street light, they may not come on--but these do light even with a major corner light nearby. And, as the instructions note, you do have to hang them five feet away from each other for the same reason.) I plan to add a dozen to light the entire back yard path..I'm only waiting for a really good sale to do that!

Love the Lanterns!

Nice accent - Not much more
Bought these recently and installed them in minutes. Very simple. Disappointed that they only have (1) AA battery to operate off. This is most likely the reason that they don't put out much light. They are very nice in the planters around my deck to define the space but they do not provide enough light to light the pathways. For the price I am satisified and they do improve the mood of the deck but they don't do much to light the way. Overall they are satisfactory but I expected more.

A little light on the subject
I purchased this same item at a home improvement store for a higher price so if you are intrested, this is the place to make your purchase. I have to confess, I am a little dissapointed in the product. While, the solar portion does work as claimed, the amount of light put out is *very* small. They certainly work well enough as a decorative item but if you are expecting to use them along a walkway so people can see, you'd be better off with something else. If you want something semi-intresting to add a little 'omph' to a bush or flower--- you'd be OK. ... Read more
