Amazon.com Review

Originally invented and marketed in Germany, the Garden Weasel is still an amazing garden tool, even after 15 years of "As Seen on TV" advertising here in the States. Its self-cleaning rotary cutters run crosswise against each other, meeting about 1-1/2 inches below the ground to break the surface soil and creating a fine till with their scissorlike action. Use this tool to break up soil in large areas or wide rows or to scarify soil for seeding. If you remove a few of the blades, you can work on exceptionally narrow rows or around plants. By using the short handle (included), you can work in greenhouses or rock gardens. Clearly, there are many uses for this tool--it's hard to imagine, but after all these years, it's still one of the best cultivators on the market. Ingenious design, versatile applications, and solid construction have kept this tool at the top for decades. --Ariel Meadow Stallings ... Read more

Features

  • Loosens the soil and does the weeding
  • Wheels run crosswise against each other
  • Scissor action ensures that the soil is continually broken up and weeds uprooted
  • Wheel prongs clean themselves of dirt automatically

4-0 out of 5 stars It actually works pretty well.
I bought my Garden Weasel about eight or ten years ago at a local (now defunct) home store chain. At the time I'd been using an inexpensive mini-tiller that drank gas and oil and jammed up regularly, and a couple of hand cultivating tools that took a lot of effort for little result. Being the lazy sort I'm always a sucker for something that claims it'll do my work for me.

I tried it in my 20x20 vegetable garden, and you know, it actually works. It's not a tool for breaking up hard soil- but then, my cheap power rototiller didn't do that very well either. The Garden Weasel does one thing, and that is weed betwween the rows of a vegetable or flower garden, so long as you use it on a regular basis. Leave the garden for a month, and you may as well get out the machete and the heavy dutytiller. But used for its intended purpose, it's pretty good.

5-0 out of 5 stars My veggie garden's best friend!
This tool is fantastic! It's dual handles, and detachable blades make it very versatile. The stainless steel blades clean up effortlessly under a house, or swished in a bucket of water (with no rust problems!) This tool saves your back, and knees from weeding your garden rows, and the small handle allows you to cultivate right up to the plant itself. Using the Garden Weasel once a week helps catch emergent weeds before they have a chance to root, and keep them from finding a home in your garden. The tines are 1.5 inches long, and will not harm your shallow rooted plants, like strawberries, etc. It does an excellent job of breaking up that top layer of soil, allowing water, fertilizer, and oxygen to help nourish your plants.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for preparing soil for planting, but not much else.
This tool works good at tilling soil before planting seed, but I have not found much use for it other than that. It definitely doesn't work on established weeds, I found that large weeds just got all tangled up in the spokes and jammed it.

4-0 out of 5 stars It does what they say it does
It actually works pretty well. I was impressed.

It has a tendency to fall off the handle, and you should wear gloves when handling the blades, as they're pretty sharp.

1-0 out of 5 stars What? What the ... negative four million...
I bought mine at sav-on ten years ago and it was useless. We have sand for soil on a vineyard in the Calif. Central Valley. The sand was either too soft and the blades didn't spin or the sand was packed and the blades didn't penetrate but just scratched at the surface. The "Blades" are not even remotely sharp. They are just the cheapest cast aluminum you could imagine. They had to have been a quarter of an inch in width at their sharpest edge. Also the "blades" have an inch give at least with their attachment point when you forced them down. This acted like a shock absorber so you couldn't muscle them into the ground! I considered this product a true piece of junk.

I sure hope they changed the product to get people to give this five stars... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product, don't review this until you OWN it!
I can't believe someone reviews a product without actually owning it, that isn't fair to the product. Anyway, it DOES include a battery (not sure exactly what type) but it's inside of the grass shearer. Just plug it's cable into the A/C and it charges. When it's ready to be used, it works like a charm in hard to reach areas of the garden. For me, I find it especially useful around patio lights that can't be mowed around easily. I'm sure I'll find other areas of the garden too!

The included tools are very nice. They have rubberized grips and look like quality tools. The kneepad could be a little softer, but it'll do. The hand pruner worked perfectly to oust a HUGE weed in the garden. Gloves are decent too.
The carrying bad is large, tough, and better than expected. A great addition!
It even comes with a 30-day no risk satisfaction guarantee. How can you go wrong for $24.99? If you bought all these items seperately, it'd be way more than that. Just a pair of garden gloves can be $15!

We just moved into our first single family home less than a week ago and I took a risk and pre-ordered this Black and Decker gardening set. It's a perfect set. Great for first time home owners like me, who literally don't own one gardening tool! (NONE!) A great set, and I am happy with it!

Happy gardening!

3-0 out of 5 stars What kind of battery does this use?
Does anyone know whether this uses the same 3.6 Volt Versapak battery as the Scumbuster and Dustbuster? Black and Decker is certainly making it difficult to determine. I looked all over the box in The Home Depot and couldn't find the answer. My guess is they are trying to hide the fact that the battery probably isn't included.
It's aggravating, because I might be willing to buy this anyway since I already own Versapak batteries, but they treat you like an idiot and leave you guessing.
I tried to submit a question to B&D web site, but, of course, they want me first to create an account and give them all my personal information.

Fear not: Your Trimmer Plus engine will have no trouble powering this add-on. Just click it onto the shaft and let the heat-treated, 8-inch steel tines do the work in the garden. The eight-spoke design bites into even the hardest-packed dirt and churns it up. We think women especially will love this attachment, because standard garden cultivators are impossibly heavy, a bear to start, and ridiculously difficult to control. It’s lighter, smaller and much easier to maneuver, but just as powerful, and the results are even better. When you’re done, detach the cultivator head with a click, hang it on the wall, and move on the next project. Superb product.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hidden Treasure
Our neighbor worked our garden with a disc and field cultivator, but we still needed to work in our compost. I stopped at the hardware store and bought the tiller attachment. I had a 31cc 2 cycle trimmer that I bought 3 years ago and had never used. I took it out of the box and attached my tiller. It started on the 3rd pull. The tiller tore through our soil with no problem. It mixed in our composte with ease. I then used it to tear right through our grass around some trees I planted. It took time, but eventually got through the sod with little effort.
I was pleasantly surprised. Now, how can I get that wheel frame from the old all-in-1 model...

5-0 out of 5 stars Works with the electric trimmer too
I own the electric Ryobi TrimmerPlus 132r and wanted to go with all non-gas for the power tools in my small yard. I planted a vegetable garden two years ago and rented a 5hp tiller to chew through the grass that was in place then. I decided to buy the cultivator attachment for the trimmer and have been extremely pleased.

I was concerned the electric motor would not be adequate for even minimal tasks but I was shocked (sorry) to find I could till through heavy dirt -- I even had to push on the back of the cultivator with my foot to get it to labor and eventually stall in the soil. I even tilled some moist but hard packed dirt without any trouble.

As other people have mentioned, the head on the unit was small enough to effectively turn over the dirt in a 30-inch wide planter.

If you're looking for a cultivator to handle a small garden, I would be surprised if you were disappointed by this product.

3-0 out of 5 stars Borrow one and test drive on YOUR soil first
When I first borrowed a friend's mini cultivator a few years ago, I was in heaven. Finally, something I could use to till my soil that was light enough for me to handle and easy enough for me to start, yet tough enough to really churn up the dirt. Unfortunately, when I got around to buying one of my own, I didn't buy the same brand. Instead, I bought a Ryobi. Since I also needed a weed eater, I figured that going with the attachment plan would save me money.

Although I like the trimmer very much, I'm not as impressed as the other reviewers with the cultivator attachment. It just doesn't feel very powerful. I attempted to use the Ryobi cultivator to work an established herb garden, and am about to give up and rent a more powerful cultivator. Perhaps my soil was too hard and compacted to work well with a mini cultivator. The Ryobi barely dug into the ground, turning up only the surface soil. I was extremely disappointed.

I do think that once I work up the soil with something stronger, the Ryobi cultivator will work well for maintenance tilling. I was impressed with how maneuverable the cultivator was. I could work around fairly densely planted herbs and perennials without destroying any desirable plants.

Based on my initial use, the blades seem quite durable and don't seem to get tangled with weeds very easily. Switching the attachments works well, too.

One design aspect that I expect to remain a drawback is the handle style. I found the handle bars on the other cultivator (unfortunately, the brand name escapes me--Stihl, I think) much easier to handle than the one-long-handle arrangement on the Ryobi.

For looser soil, the Ryobi should work fine for you, but unfortunately, my yard just isn't as cooperative as the other reviewers.

5-0 out of 5 stars New homeowner, old unkempt yard
I've never touched a lawnmower, weedeater, or any other garden tool up until 2 months ago when I bought my first home. The landscaping needs a complete overhaul, and thanks to this cultivator, I think I'll be able to do it myself. I've already redone the rock-hard old raised beds in the front of the house. Now if only I could buy an Add-On Handyperson attachment!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough as nails, and worth every penny!
You can't hurt this thing. It tears through ANY soil, roots etc and does so as well as the big tillers that don't fit in a household garden. This is useful for small vegetable gardens, but the best use is refreshing the soil around shrubs in your foundation beds. Its litle head gets in tight spaces, and you can drop it straight down into a spot you couldn't wheel a big tiller into. It gets roots tangled around it, but clears easily. The tines are indestructible, as is all the rest. I'm glad I got the 4-cycle 875R trimmer, because this thing uses all the torque it puts out. A very good investment. Saves a whale of a lot of storage in the garage, too!!! ... Read more

... I got carpal tunnel in both hands many years ago and had surgery to fix it. The surgery worked, but my hand strength has never been back to 100% of what it was. 5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite garden tool.
I keep a vegetable garden in Winder, GA, and this is my favorite gardening tool. I use it for everything from initial planting (after the ground has been broken and prepared with larger tools) to scratching fertilizer into the soil ongoing. It's lightweight, convenient to hold and easy to use to loosen soil.

Also seems to be pretty much indestructible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Gadget for Small Areas
I bought this gadget after seeing the commercial. It has become my favorite outdoor tool. Living in a brownstone I have very little earth to tend. So for my purposes, it's better than a garden fork, etc. It's surprisingly well made and the design makes it effortless to use.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not good for hard soil, soil with a lot of roots or rocks
I bought this baby because I have hard soil with clay in it. So I thought I would try to airate it and soften it up with this garden weasel and then mix it with some baught soil. This tool isn't any good for anything other then soft soils that need to be shaken up a bit. It is handy and more comfortable to break that type of soil or if you have a few small pebbles though it has to be pretty soft soil to begin with and not ridden with roots or rocks. Otherwise I hope your strong and have a lot of will power if you still want to buy this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally gardening made easy
After years of trying to turn dirt in our garden with a shovel we invested in the Garden Claw. Not only is it easy to use, but is saves your back and arms from unnecessary strain. In my yard the soil can become as solid as concrete, but the Garden Claw broke the ground loose with ease.

I would reccommend this product highly based on my initial experience. I am looking forward to seeing how the Garden Claw holds up over time and repeated use.

5-0 out of 5 stars great product
I bought this producta couple years ago and have used it often. It makes digging holes to plant my roses sooo much easier.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Garden Claw saved my garden!
The Garden Claw definately lives up to it's claims! I had a baby in April and was SURE that my garden would be overtaken by weeds this season. After using a hoe in a section of the garden and only getting a little done after an hour of hard work, I decided to try the Garden Claw. This product is amazing! It lifted up the toughest weeds in seconds! All I had to do was scoop them up and toss them in the compost pile! I also noticed that I lost a lot less soil because the claw loosens the soil so well that it just falls off the roots of the weeds. My garden is quite large and I am able to keep it under control thanks to the Claw. I have also used the Claw under trees to quickly knock out the weeds. It does give your shoulders and arms a workout, but you just need to pace yourself. I have bragged so much about this product to friends and family that 3 of them have purchased one for themselves and have had the same great results! Thanks to the Garden Claw this is one of the best seasons I've had for my garden! ... Read more
