This machine failed to provide what the manufacturer promissed.
The elctrical motor which controls the position of the chute burnes out within few months. The manufacturer knows about the problem yet it continues to sell the snow thrower with it. Instead of reimbursing or recalling all the model the manufacturer simply wants you to buy a concersion kit for $55.00. The conversion kit is far more complicated to install than they want you to think. The customer support is teriible. Do yourself a favor .. do not buy this machine.

A good machine, but did not received all that was promised.
I just have unpacked, tighten two screws to put the handle bar with controls (that is all the assembly work I had to do), poured some gasoline, checked the engine oil which was already there, then started a few times both using electric and coil. The engine never failed to start so far. coil Starting is so reliable so far that I am yet to see if I really need the electric start at all.

However it was supposed to be trigger controled, (as it is still on their description) I see the place on the handle bar where the triggers should go, but the triggers and their wires are missing. And I have not figured out how to lock the levers yet. Without locking them, it is not one hand operation, I will need all four hands and feet.
As far as the machine is concern, it seems very good.

Good Value, easy starting
It's been two full years since I wrote the initial review on this mower and it contiues to give excellent service.My lawn is about 1/2 acre so there is a lot of cutting with a push mower from April to Sept.I have changed the oil twice in two seasons but have not chaged the spark plug or the air filter.After sitting in the garage unused for five month this past winter it started after about 3 pulls.Having the priming bulb helps a lot.

My previous mower was a Homlite rear bagger which I paid over [money]. I had the mower for 9 years and had to replace the bag once and the pull cord twice because it was so difficult to start.Compared to the Homlite the mulching Yardman is so much easier to use. During the season it usually starts with two pulls without priming and I don't have to empty the bag. With a 6 HP engine it even strong enough to mulch several big pile of leaves that have collected in the woods at back of my lot.

Last year I purchased an inexpensive mower blade sharpner attachment for my power drill([money] at the local ACE hardware).It does a pretty good job taking out the nicks and maintaining the cutting edge. So far I've not paid to have the blade sharpened.This YardMan has been a very low maintainance mower for me.

Good value, some are better
Had this mower for 5 years now. It has provided good cutting and bagging for my med/small yard (.45 acres some of which is natural areas).

Like its power and simple design avoiding the complications of self propelled systems. The side bag is a bit of a pain. If you do a lot of bagging, you may want to go with a rear bagger.

Have had to take it in for reparis 2-3 times, replace the front wheels (plastic originals cracked). Most of the paint is peeling off now but it still cuts good. Will buy a Toro next time (at twice+ the cost)

Raw power, excellent mulching
If you're looking for a basic, no-frills mower with the power to mulch seriously overgrown grass, this is it. It starts easily, runs well, and I've never been able to bog it down, even when my lawn is starting to look like rain forest. Construction quailty is very solid, and the ball bearing wheels should spin wobble-free for many years to come.

The only limitation is the optional side bag, which I've only used a few times. It gets in the way, clogs easily, doesn't hold much, and is inconvient to empty. If you intend to bag frequently, look at rear baggers instead.

So, I'll give the mower 5 stars, with the suggestion that you skip the bag. END

Good Price, Easy to start
I bought this mower from Sears yesterday.I liked the design and the price.This is the only mulching model available with a 6.0 HP engine for less than $200.(I paid $199.99). Name brands from Toro and John Deere wouldbe at at least $300.I have had Homelite(now John Deere) push mower with a3.5 hp engine that I bought more than 10 years ago and paid more than $300.I like the Homlite because it had an alloy deck and was very light.Ifinally decided to buy a new mower yesterday after the pull cord broke forthe third time in two years.

This Yard Man come fully assembled.All Ihad to do was to raise the handle, tighten two wing nuts, add gas, oil andgo.The new engine started after just two pulls.After the inital startit took only one pull for subsequent starts.Made me wonder why I put upwith the old mower for the last few years.

I have a one acre lot withabout half an acre of grass but I have always used a push mower because Iwant the exercise.I am the only one in my neighborhood who does not havea 20 HP riding mower or hire someone else to cut the grass.

The YardMan has a steel deck so it's about 20lbs heavier than my old mower but itdid not feel that way. Unlike some Craftsman models I tried, the YardManis easy to manneuver.The cutting hight adjustment is very easy to set.Iwas only able to mowe for about 1/2 hour before a thunderstorm arrived, butso far I am quite satisfied with the purchase. The going rate for havingyour grass cut is $50 in my neighborhood.At that rate it takes less thana month to pay for my new mower.The extra cardio workout is an addedbonus.I will write more comments after I have more experience with themulching operation. ... Really Bad Customer Service
I purchased my Yard-Man in Jan 2004.Mower worked fine until I hit a rock while mowing in November 2004.I took the mower to a Yard-Man authorized service center where I was told I needed a new blade hub (holds blade on to shaft) but that it was a simple repair.Long story short, it took 7 weeks to get this part!The owner of the repair shop told me MTD is notorious for their poor parts distribution.I made a complaint to customer service via their MTD website.My reply was a link to a FAQ section that explains not every part can be kept in stock and that some orders may take 14 days.Basically they blew me off.As this is my only recourse, I would advise not to buy any MTD product because of their poor customer service.

hard worker
I bought this mower 6 years ago, my son and i mowed lawns for the son to have extra money. we needed a better mower and found this one to be onsale. we liked the rear wheel drive, as we found that with front wheel drives as the bagger fills the weight tends to lift the front, then you have to lift the handle bars to get traction, not with this modle. this mower is the older briggs 6hp and has been worked to death(with proper maintenance)and a lot of parts have been changed or removed but, it is still working and i will buy another one!

Rear Drive Bliss (and it now has a Honda Engine!)
I bought one of these mowers three years ago when I saw it rated as a "Best Buy" by Consumer Reports. There are still a few reviews on line (...). At the time, it came with a B&S Intek OHV engine. We just moved into a new home with a "seeded lawn." Turned out there were more rocks and clumps than grass. The terrain was quite hilly--too much so to use a graden tractor. A front drive walk-behind would be useless prompting me to purchase one of these rear drives. It takes about 4 hours to cut my lawn. Through all the "hard times" (waiting for the grass to grow and rocks to settle) and my mower still starts on the first pull! Now that my second mower has arrived, I am going to install the last of my replacement parts (including the belt, blade and baffle-the plastic part that surronds the blade underneath the mower) in the old unit. In three years, the only part that really needed replacing was the left rear wheel (which you must buy from MTD) which I did a few weeks ago. The wheel is not expensive so order two (if you purchase one of these mowers and are ordering parts). The mower drives through that rim and it will fail eventually (mine did after two years but other than a wobbly wheel, it still performed fine). Order a spare blade and belt while you are at it (have the model and serial number handy when you call the 800 number on the mower). Now to the new mower. Like the last one, this mower is also made in Canada. It has to travel a long way to get to its destination and, as others have said, MTD really needs to reengineer their boxes if they hope to capture the internet sales market for its mowers. Mine came in fine, however. Nothing was damaged or missing. I rolled it out of the box, extended the handle, put on the bagger chute, added oil and gas, connected the spark plug, set the choke, and WHAM!!! It started on the first pull! The choke automically cuts itself off (a nice feature). Honda engine has less HP than the B&S but you would never know it. This is a great little motor that I understand sells for $200 by itself! Well, now I own two of these guys. I will use the old one for the rough places in the back yard and "parade" the new one in the front. Now my wife or kids can help and my lawn duty should be more manageable. While I would never compare this mower to a real Honda, I will just say that I bought two of these for the price of one Honda. Bottom line is that I am very satisfied with this mower. Yard-man may have had some problems (based on what I have read in Consumers Reports) with self-propelled models but I bet they were all front drivers. The drive on this model is terrific. Don't be fooled!
My... Murray mows circles around this machine! My mower arrived damaged and after contacting everyone I could think of, with nobody willing to replace it for an undamaged model, I had to take it to the repair shop. Now, two weeks later, I finally filled it up with oil and gas and couldn't be more disappointed! The bagging attachment is very poorly designed, throwing grass in your face while mowing due to a loose fit. It is extremely difficult to dump clippings into a trash bag due to the flap attachment of the grass bag. The mower starts easily but is too heavy and cumbersome to mow around landscaping easily. I'm not impressed with the quality of cut at all. The finish this mower provides is not as good as my... Murray. If I had purchased this mower at a retail outlet I would return it and look for a Honda or Toro.

First Impressions
The mower was completely assembled when I opened its shipping box. The recoil starter is the easiest to pull I have ever used. The mower's B&S 6.5 HP motor is powerful and has always started on the first pull. The self-propelled 6-speed goes from slow to very fast. The evenness of the cut is excellent using the mulching feature, I havn't tried the side discharge or bagging features yet. A minus I have found is that it is rather heavy to maneuver around trees and fence posts. The tread on the wheels is not aggressive enough; on slopes there is some wheel spin. I haven't had it long enough to determine its reliability. I rate it 4+ stars.

Several Problems in after 3 seasons of use
I have similar problems with my Yard-man model 979 as many of the other reviewers. My gear shifter is frozen and one of the wheels keeps falling off due to a worn screw hole in the front axle assembly. I have only been using it for 3 seasons. Considering how much it cost, I expected better quality, durability and reliability. I've used several mowers in my life (mostly really cheap ones) and this has the worst quality of all of them.

I brought my Self Propelled mower about 3-4 years ago and after the first year I became very disappointed. Like many of the complaints in the prior reviews, I have a problem with the gear box. Currently I only have the 6th gear and that does not move the mower as though it's in 6th gear, more like 2nd or 3rd.

Shear pin?
I paid [amount of money] for this mower, and had two major problems in two years. First, the lower gears in the transmission failed. The only gear that worked was 6th. Second, and most importantly, I hit a hidden rock with it, and because there apparently is no shear pin, bent the drive shaft. The local lawn mower shops told me to throw it away. I got a really good deal on this mower because it was left over from last season. I was hoping that it would be all it was announced to be, and it hasn't let me down.
The machine is solid as a rock, comfortable to drive for hours, and all the features add up to a really good buy.
The turning radius isn't great, but I'm sure if you want to pay another 1500 bucks, one of those Zero-turning-radius machines would do you up right. For the rest of us, though, this machine puts it all in perspective - it has the heavy-duty front end, the hourmeter/stats on constant display, all the horsepower you'll ever need, and just about the most comfortable seat on the market.
Being a new unit, I haven't had to purchase any replacement parts, so I may be writing again in the hopefully distant future - but, for now put me in the category labelled "happy owners." ... Read more
