starts very easy
I have used my new yardman 3 times and I am on my 2nd v-belt. I have an old toro before they came out with the shute and it still has the orginal belt on it. I like the idea of not mixing the oil with the gas. The engine starts easily and it hasn't stalled on me yet which is great. I might try a 34 and a half inch belt next time and see if it last better. The snow was on the heavy side but I can't control mother nature. I have a long driveway. I tried the electric start once and it works but it starts on the first or second pull so I don't have to use it. If it wasn't for the v-belts I would rate it higher.

HOW EASY!
I read about this lawn mower in Consumer Reports, I ordered it from Amazon (which seemed odd to me, but realized they'd deliver it to my door).I put it together (requires very little set-up), and it worked.For a mower that isn't self-propelled, it's light weight and easy to handle.It may be called a Yard-Man, but it's also good for a Yard-Woman.The only problem is that is works best for a right-handed person.It's impossible to pull the starter with your left hand. Excellent mower!
It's perfect for uneven terrains because of the big wheels at the back. The Briggs & Stratton engine is excellent. Been using it for the last 4 years and never once did I have any probs. Back then it was the best lawn mower to buy according to the consumer digest reports.

Great mower
This is my third season with this mower.Virtually problem free; it's performed nearly flawlessly.The self-propelled mower (make sure it's the self-propelled mower like the description of the product says; the title says push mower) practically mows the lawn by itself.The cut is quick and even.

The only glitch is that if you stop it to go from one part of your property to another (should you need to wheel the mower over concrete or asphalt), it is tough to restart.It will restart, but you have to wait a few minutes and then pull the cords several times for it to start up.It's a little annoying, but overall I'm very glad I bought this mower.

Not a bad mower if you are not too rough with it...
Good mower for the money.Powerful engine, nice big rear wheels and easy bag use.The only downfall I see to this mower is the fact that the wheels and the way they are attached are not the most durable.It has been fine for me, but when I allowed someone else to use it (someone who was a bit careless with it) it didn't hold up as well.I had to replace some of the wheel connecting parts.For my use it is fine, if I wanted something that was very very durable I would have bought a Toro for quite a bit more.All the features of the expensive mowers.It's worth it.

Avoid This Brand and Especially This Model
This mower was a disaster from the start. I'd heard bad things about Yard-Man, but I thought I'd give this one a try. It was shipped with the front wheel so out of wack, that the mower wouldn't roll. Then it stopped working in the middle of it's FIRST use. After taking it to a service center, it still isn't working right! All I can say is that there are much better choices.

easy to use and fun
I actually use an older model of this Yard man.The big wheels make it a breeze to cut my grandparent's one-and-a half acre yard(with lots of stumps)I don't mind it at all.My old one starts with just one pull(usually) and has never died on me(exccept when out of gas)

Nice mower but needs Bag
I bought this mower for my Fiance whose dogs have turned her back yard into an obsticle cource of holes and massive chew toys.
She is able to easaly start and run this mower over her uneven back yard. It did not come with a grass catching bag. The box states that this is an option, so I thought I would order it later.Hours of web searching have not yet located a bag and this is rather upsetting.

Great Little Mower
If you are looking for something with a powerful engine that is not to heavy, this is it.I have alot of hills in my yard and this wasn't nearly as difficult as i thought it would be to push up them.Easy to start pull string was nice, and large wheels make it easy to go over bumps.I'm glad i bought it and would reccommend it.

Love the Bug
I have used my yardbug for one season and have enjoyed it thouroughly. It is very easy to use and cuts great. So far I have had no problems with it and I am looking forward to another year of mowing.

For lack of a nail.
For lack of a nail the war was lost!This mower has all the makings of a great product but is now sold only at Amazon.
Probably because of poor quality control.
I built a ramp to unload it from the truck and saved the extra shipping costs (thanks to a reviewer). The first three times I tried to use it the top belt slipped off then broke. Since I don't have a way to get it to a shop I checked it myself and found that the pulleys
on the motor shaft were never bolted on!!!! The factory sent me the parts and it's been working fine for three weeks. If your good with tools, Buy it. It's fun to use.

Yard Man Yard Bug - Bagger underwhelming
Right off the bat had problems with the delivery agent.They did not have a lift-gate truck and requested help for the driver to unload.The mower arrived in a full tractor-trailer with no ramp or way to get the wood framed crate off the trailer.The driver and I muscled it off using a ladder and plywood as a ramp.The "free" delivery was crap.Also after uncrating and trying to start it the battery was dead.I was unable to charge it to any level which would turn over the engine.I had to purchase another battery which fixed that problem.The cut seems even and the mower is much more maneuverable than my previous tractor-type mower.But the vacumn ability of the cutting deck is not as good, it doesn't pick up everything you go over.It may be due to the design of the deck/bagger which is an integrated unit under the seat, also the chute is fairly narrow which will clog easily in heavy/wet leaves or clippings.This design does make for a narrower unit as there is no external chute connecting to the side of the deck which takes up space and creates clearance problems when trying to cut up close to something on that side.Overall I feel it works best as a mulcher/side discharge mower.Don't expect to pick up huge amounts of leaves or clippings as the bagger fills up too fast and will require many trips to empty.

Great machine; easy to use
I've had my YardBug for two years.I loved it when I got it and still love it now.I would highly recommend it yards of half acre or less.

Under-Seat Bagger:For the first year and a half, I used the under-seat bagger.I live in Florida, with daily afternoon rain, and the grass gets rather long every week.The cut of the machine is excellent.I will mention that if the grass is damp (as it is in early mornings here with all the moisture), it does not pick up every piece of grass, but still did quite well.(I would imagine that is true of most machines, not just a trait of this one.)

Mulcher:A few months ago, I decided to put the mulching attachment on, which was quite easy to do.The cut is not quite as even as when the under-seat bagger is used, but I was certainly pleased enough to stop bagging all that grass and carting it to the curb, and I will continue to use the mulcher (perhaps if I slowed down a bit, it may help, but it was not bothersome to me).

I've not used the side-discharge, so I cannot comment on that feature.

Being a dedicated riding mower and not a "lawn tractor," the size is nice and compact.Also, other machines that I've seen charge extra for a bagger and/or mulching attachment, which is not the case with this machine.I would say overall, for the quality and price, it can't be beat.

Love the Yardbug
I purchased the Yardbug about a month ago and have been absolutely pleased with the process and the product.My satisfaction started with the delivery - the Yardbug was delivered to my backyard by a local freight company.The bug had been well crated for shipment and arrived without a scratch.I had the bug uncrated and ready to start in about an hour - I added gasoline, turned the key and it started immediately.This machine is perfect for my yard - approximately 7,500 sq ft.It is maneuverable and makes mowing fun.I am just sorry that I waited so long to buy it!! ... This is great

Battery Problems
I purchased the Yardman from Handyman on 4/25/01- it was last year's model. Last week the mower would not start and when I took it to the shop, they said the battery was dead and was not under warranty. I am very disappointed and feel that some restitution should be made since this was last year's model and I am sure that battery had been used for demonstrations to customers many times before I purchased it.

Not a Work Horse, but okay for lighter work
I've owned an MTD tractor for 8 years. If you are not aware, MTD is a parent company that makes various "brands" including Yardman, Murray, various "hardware store brands" and Cub Cadet. The Cub Cadet brand represents their "high end" line, and not surprisingly, they are quite a bit more expensive.

I would recommend that Yard Man tractors be considered for smaller plots of mowing, as they do require more maintenance and more careful attention to routine inspections. In eight years, I had changed the drive pulley four times, had the carburetor fixed, fiddled with deck adjustments countless times, and replaced numerous cotter pins and washers that rattled off the machine while running. Still, I suppose, eight years of hard use on a two-acre plot, despite such maintenance, was not bad for a low priced tractor.

If you are willing to go an extra [price]to [price], there are two tractors that have big advantages over Yard Man: the Simplicity Regent and the Toro 16-38hxl. The latter is priced at [price]but has a commendable reliability record. On the other hand, if you don't intend to use the Yard Man on more than one acre, and are marginally handy with routine maintenance, then it is probably a good buy in the long run. They have undoubtedly made some improvements since the one I had, and I know of some owners who really like them. Do keep in mind that almost all brands of lawn tractors use Briggs and Stratton engines, so that is not really a purchasing factor (B&S has recently made great strides in developing quiter, more reliable engines). If the free shipping deal is still running, that's an extra incentive, too.

A great machine for the price
I bought my second MTD lawn tractor last year. There may be better machines, but I haven't found one at anywhere near this price. The first one (single cylinder / 38" cut)did 8 years of fairly heavy duty mowing and cart hauling. I had to replace one sealed blade spindle bearing and had to put tubes in the tires so they would hold air towards the end(not a big problem). This machine was sold to a friend who is still using it. The new one is the 17 HP twin Briggs/42" cut(incredibly smoother) and it handles like a dream. Bigger, more comfortable and tighter turning. Also like the "no-scalp" wheels on the mower deck. I have the "7 speed-shift on the go" transmission, which I love. You need only use the forward/reverse lever right in front of you to change direction and can slow down for close trimming by using the "clutch" which actually just changes the ratio of the drive pulley and does not "slip".Big green machines may be better, but I can not justify the price compared to the performance of the MTD. One thing every competant individual will want to do is unplug the "ridiculous" reverse mowing cutout so one can mow backwards around obstacles. The dealer "cannot" do this by law, but curiously, the law does not require the switch, only that it must work when delivered if origionaly installed! I would buy another MTD in a minute!

Light Duty Only
I have a Yard Man tractor mower that is several years old. It is not a bad machine; it cuts the lawn and tows a light trailer. There are a few things I hope they have improved on since I bought mine.

The blade spindles have "permanently" lubricated bearings. A greasable bearing would be better; when these bearings shell out, you must repalace the whole assembly, shaft and all, at about $45 a pop, two independent assemblies on the deck. I average at least one pair per year, mowing about 1 1/2 acres a week.

When the neutral adjustment on the hydrostatic transmission slips, it is a real "bear" to adjust. The tractor must jacked up so the rear wheels clear the floor, not an easy task unless you have a floor jack and then stabilize it with blocks of wood. I live in small town, so factory approved service is 75 miles away.

The manual is not very well written. The transmission started to slip and the solution was "add oil." It didn't say what kind or how to add it. I had to call the 800 number during business hours to get the correct answer. Does anybody else out there discover these problems late Sunday afternoon?

It is probably an adequate mower for light duty in a small yard, but next time I buy one I will look for servicable bearings, a well written manual and better manufacturer support. Perhaps it would be cheaper to hire the mowing done; beer-thirty would come a little sooner each mowing day! ... Read more

Poor customer service
The low rating on this product is aimed at the customer service/warranty associated with the product group. I bought a MTD lawn tractor 5 months ago and within 31/2 months the thread on the shoulder bolt striped out resulting in the idler pulley falling out of position. I called MTD for the location of a authorized service location in my area. The automated answering machine gave me the name and number for the service dealer. I confirmed with the service provider that the defect was a warranty repair. It took a month to get the tractor fixed and when I went to pick it up I was told that it wasn't under warranty and if I wanted to pick up the tractor I would have to pay for the repairs. I reminded him that he had confirmed warranty at the time I brought it in. At that time he said it was to hard to procees the warranty. I contacted MTD and the service rep said he would contact the service provider and call me back. He never returned the call so I called again. This time a service rep told me that they didn't tell me were to take the tractor for repair and that the choice had been mine. I told him that the automated system for service had that dealer as the authorized service provider in this area. He said he didn't care what it said, that the choice was still mine for where I took it. He did say he would call them to get the other side of the complaint and call me back. I went ahead and paid the charges for the repair because by that time I needed it. I did get the nut and bolt that had been replaced and after measuring them found that both components were grossly out of industrial specifications. The thread engagement for that combination should have been about 77%, the bolt and nut used on the tractor had less than 50%. With a third less thread emgagement the bolt would stripe at a much lower torque than normal. The components used on this tractor can be manufactured cheaper and faster than standard fasteners. The service rep from MTD, surprisingly, did call back and told me that the reason the warranty was not allowed was because I hadn't supplied Proof of Purchase. I told him I had and that the date was on the receipt I received from the service provider. I informed him of measurements on the defective material and the impact on the failure mode. Some of the numbers were technical in nature so I told him he should confirm them with his engineering dept. His main concern was that I had the defective parts and he wanted to know how I got them. I told him I had just ask for them. He said he would investigate further and call me back. Guess what? No call. It's also the last MTD product I ever buy.

Integrity and Speed
I was reluctant at first to make this purchase over the net. I am, however, sure glad I did. The process went fast and painless. The equipment was exactly as I expected plus more. The price was much better than if I purchesed this lawn tractor locally. The speed of delivery and the friendly help of the delivery personnel was a big plus. I have already used this equipment and find it to be of good quality and ease of use.
Keep up the good work. Lastly, I've noticed a customer service availability, I don't need them, all is fine here.

The Yard Bug may look cute, but don't get so caught up in its curvaceous lines that you neglect its enviable design and practicality. This is a strong little machine with some unusual and innovative qualities. Perch on the comfortable yellow seat and you can control the gas, brakes, and blade engager with your feet. The ignition, the throttle (tortoise to hare), the gears (forward, neutral, and reverse), and the blade height adjuster (with five choices, from low to high) are all within easy reach of your hands. Mowing in reverse

Great little Machine.
I received my Yard Bug in a week from the time I ordered it. The Trucking Company called me two days before delivery and I explained to them that this was a private residence and I had no way to unload it if they sent a tractor trailer or regular box truck. After hearing my situation, they sent it out on a lift-gate truck and used a palate- jack to take it from the street to my garage. I followed the instructions, put the battery on charge while I ran some errands for a couple of hours, hooked up the battery when I got home and drove it away. Put it through it's paces for about a halh hour ahd am real satisfied.

Poor Quality
This "Bug" is really poor. I bought a yardman and experienced a lot of trouble: Gasline leakage, engine failed to start, etc. So it is not a best buy for your choice!

So far I love it.
I just bought the "Club Cadet Yard Bug" (it is identical as far as I can tell, except it has a 9 hp motor) and it appears to be a great little machine.I have a disability and needed a small riding mower to do the multiple tasks of cleaning and mowing my yard.This little bug seems to do it all.It cleaned up bushels of dead leaves and dust and [stuff] off my lawn, which was a bit messy (considering you sit over the bagger and the exhaust air comes out around the cowling), but once it got this initial job done, the messy part ended.Certainly, had I used it only with the side discharge, or mulch, there would not have been any problem with the air flow making everything (including me) dirty. I do, however, recommend you go over the thing completely before using it.With no fualt of the machine, I found many adjustments were not set properly and a few bolts were loose .Overall the Bug is well built, easy to handle, easy to store, did what I wanted it to do, and as a absolutely useless bonus: it's cute!

Delivery a Nightmare
I don't know if I will like this product or not. However, everyone considering purchasing this product should be aware that "free delivery" means they will drive a truck with the mower on it to your house. It your responsibility to get the unit off of the truck. In the event you don't have the man/woman power around the house to unload (not uncrate, assemble,etc.)the 475 lb. mower, you will be charged [a huge fee].THIS NEEDS TO BE MADE ABLSOLUTELY CLEAR. ...
