a most-helpful item.
If you do not own a leatherman tool ... well then you do not know what you are missing. This successor to the Swiss Army Knife has to be one of the most helpful items you can buy.

Note: It is now available in a multitude of colors ... I would recommend getting the brightest color that you can (based on where it will be used most) that way it will not blend into the background if dropped ... and will be much harder to misplace.

I love it!
Owned a Micra before. Indispensible. The P4 is even better! Folds tighter, tools are more useful, you don't have to unfold the pliers to use the other tools. Shaped is more curved, feel better in hand. Super high quality like all their other products. I carry it around all the time. I love it!

Versatile, plus looks good too!
I have an SOG mini, Micra, Buckknife mini, Victorinox mini and while each has their strong points the SOG was by far the best. That is, until I got the Squirt P4. Well made, the matte finish is silky to the touch, the tools snick out nicely, the spring action on the pliers gives just enough tension and return..it just can't be beat. All edges while tool is closed are nicely turned and rounded and while the toughness/durability of the anodized finish might be suspect compared with the stainless steel of the SOG and Micra, it does look nice. Well worth the price. SHop around, they range from $26 to $39. A good buy even at $39!

Leatherman Squrt P4
A long time nonfan of Leatherman products:I decided the third time might be the charm.I won't name the 2 products I didn't like. I purchased 1 P4 at Noon on 10/15/02. With a little destructive,I dulled the Knife blade, 7 more were in my hands by sundown on the 16th. Everybody is getting them for Christmas. The size,shape and weight are close to perfect. Wire melts between the cutter jaws. The pliers are fine enough to pick screws out of cameras crevasses; while the wider section can tighten those annoying bolts on childrens toys. My friend set some DIP switchs with the awl. I think thats a stretch. Wandering around I could only find a few specilized appliances the screwdrivers won't fit. For the what it is you can't get a better tool. I have the SOG equivalent which has it's strong points. If I had to carry only one it would be the Squirt P4. ... Read more

Pocket-sized tool
I've had a number of leatherman and SOG multi-tools and this mini-tool is my favorite. It folds up small enough to actually fit in a standard pants pocket, yet folds out into a usefull set of pliers that you can squeeze the heck out of. In the office or on the docks, I can fix, pry or tear apart anything. The multi-tools that require a sheath or holster are frequently snagged as I squeeze past railings or get caught in a seatbelt. The only problem I've had in the past was finding a replacement after I melted the plier ends in a light socket. Problem solved. ... Read more

Compact but poor design
I don't like this design for knife sheaths and here is why. In order to reduce the amount of material the leather is folded around behind the sheath. Then the corners are riveted in place with a flap for the belt loop. The leather always seems to tear at one of these rivets. Plus when you are threading your belt through the belt loop it tends to hang up on the open section of the sheath between the rivets. It's not that it doesn't work, its just that there is a much one.

For another dollar you can get a much better designed sheath. The ones's with the stiching around the outside of two pieces of leather. (931400 or model 931100) It's worth spending the extra money. ... Read more

Like it better than the Micra
I've had a Micra for over two years, got a Squirt S4 last month and already prefer it to the Micra. The color didn't peel off, it fits a bit better in my hand, I like the tweezers much better and the tools are more accessible.

Very Similar to "Micra"
I have mixed feelings about this product. I gave it 5 stars because it is a top notch Leatherman product. The mixed review is whether it outpreforms the Leatherman Micra that it sort of replaces.

First, its just a tad shorter and a tad wider than the Micra. You won't notice the difference in your pocket.

Second, the reverse opening sissors is just as easy to open as the Micra. It has all the same tools, although they feel smaller they look like they handle the same set of screws. The bottle opener is a bit smaller but it still opens the lift top bottles just as well.

The tweezers do come completely out from the body of the knife which is good and bad. Good because they are easier to use, bad because they are easier to lose. On the other hand they are well integrated into the body of the knife with a small tab for removing them.

And on the Micra when I open it the tweezers always swing out whether I need them or not.

So its a toss between the two of them. So in general I'd have to go with price, and the older Micra is a few bucks cheaper. ... Read more

Good product, compact, but pain chips easily
I replaced a small swiss-army knife with the Squirt S4 after losing the knife. I definately like the Squirt a lot better than my old swiss army knife. It's a little bigger, but still a less bulky than my Car Key w/Integrated Keyless Entry.

Squirt scissors are fairly strong and can but through any number of materials, including amazon.com packing boxes, small plants/flowers, and the sealed plastic that small electronics are sold in.

It is solid made and none of the tools flex or bend under normal use. The knife is razor sharp out of the box; it seems to hold its edge a slightly better than my swiss.

My one complaint is that the paint will chip and scratch after a few weeks on a keychain. If that's important to you, I strongly recommend getting a Squirt Case. It's a leather slip case that the squirt slides into.

Squirt vs. Micra
Over the past five years, with my addled mind that forgets where I leave things and forgets that I can't take a pen knife through an airline security check point, I've had to purchase a succession of Micras and Squirts. I loved the Micra and, initially, was not happy when Leatherman replaced it with the more expensive Squirt. Now that I've had a Squirt for the past year (and recently lost it), there is no way I would go back to the Micra. The Squirt is a better made and more solid tool. The scissors on the old Micra tended to nick easily and get out of alignment. I used the Squirt scissors on everything from cutting my nails to pruning flowers and they never wore down or became misaligned. The Squirt is a far better multi-tool and worth the extra price. I just can't live without it.

Great Add on for Super Tool
As a Desktop Support Tech I find myself tearing open PC's a lot. This attachment lets me keep my most essential screwdrivers and bits on my waist instead of me digging the right one up and bringing it back to the machine, or carrying the machine all the way back to my workbench and doing the job then bringing it back. I don't have time to do that so I like to do as much as I can at the users location. Well this lets me do that. My only complaint is that the bits are not magnetic so until I get some to carry with me I have to be careful about dropping screws. For those Techs out there still working on older Compaq systems the star driver comes with the attachment so you don't have to go hunting one down if you use this product. Well done Leatherman, well done.

A great, great tool, made even better...
This is a wonderful tool. I picked up a leatherman tool just over eight months ago and just received the tool adaptor. It takes an already extremely practical tool and makes it even more so. The hex bit drivers are interchangeable with any of your favorite existing hex bits, and the carrying case snaps onto your belt alongside your other pocket tools. After getting the attachment, I am scouring local hardware stores for more great hex bits. Now if i could only find a great carrying case for all my bits...

Handy gadget to expand the use of your Leatherman(tm)
First, let me mention an important fact missing in the description.

The tool adaptor only works with the original Leatherman known as the PST(tm), the PST2(tm), the Sideclip(tm), the Supertool(tm), and the Flair(tm). It does not work with the WAVE(tm), Micra(tm),and Crunch(tm) which doesn't need it because it has the 1/4" drive holder built in.

The reason is that in order to fit the Leatherman tool the Tool Adaptor relies on a raised shoulder on the side of the handle on the pliers. Only the above mentioned Leatherman plier tools have this handle design. (SOG owners will just have to drool, as it doesn't fit.)

Now for all you owners of those Leatherman tools who have this design. This adaptor is great. It has a standard 1/4 drive head which holds any electric screwdriver head. There are inumerable heads that are available from hardware stores. You can now fix those tiny phillips screws, those torix head bolts, those robertson head screws, those allen head bolts. All with this adaptor. The best thing about using the adaptor vs the straight screw driver that comes with the Leatherman is the adaptor locks in place both up and down and side to side. No folding tools while you are levering away.

To use it, you open your pliers, slide the adaptor over the top, positioning the tab into the shoulder of the handle and close the pliers around the adaptor. Its now locked in place.

I recommend that you also buy the larger sheath that goes with your tool adaptor and the type of Leatherman(tm) pliers you have. If you can't find it here, look at the Leatherman(tm) home site. They don't sell the knives, just the sheaths. Being able to carry the pliers and this adaptor and a number of bits on your belt in one handy case is worth it.

This is the tool that started the Leatherman revolution. Despite the introduction of new and more elaborate models from Leatherman, the Original remains a popular tool. We like the tough, compact design of the Original, as well as the high quality of the blades and tools. The jaws of the pliers are extremely tough. The Original packs a pretty impressive assortment of tools, including wire cutters, a knife, a metal/wood file, a can/bottle opener, an awl/punch, a nice assortment of Phillips screwdrivers, and more--all perfect for quick, on-the-spot jobs. It's true that the big knife blade would be more effective if it faced the other way, and that having to open the whole thing to get at any of the tools is less than ideal (both issues have been addressed in Leatherman's Wave). Letherman, The Original and Still The Best
I received my first Leatherman PST in 1994. I have carried it almost everyday since. If I forget it at home, it is like leaving the house without your watch, you soon realize just how frequently you use it.

The only negative thing I can say about this tool, is that the blades and the screwdrivers don't lock in place. This is less critical with the blades because you push against the blade and it stays put. However, the screwdrivers do need to be locked down when you are cranking hard on a stuck screw. The tool will sometimes close up, pinching your fingers (this is the reason I give the PST 4 stars instead of 5). You can tighten the hinge to prevent this, but then the tool is harder to open and close, and hinders single handed operation.

****UPDATE 10/20/03 My PST is from 1994. I "believe" the newer PST has a different type of screwdriver, that is angled to reduce the possibility of it closing up on you (But I still like the Wave better)****

The best way to deal with this is to get the better Leatherman; the Wave. It has locking screwdrivers and is more comfortable in your hand when clamping down on the pliers. Not to mention it has more features.

If you are a "tinkerer" or "a fixer" type person, you need a Leatherman. Trust me, get the wave, you will own it forever and you won't regret it.

I am a professional and often wear business attire, the belt case hides nicely right next to my beeper. If I lost my Leatherman right now, I would stop on my way home and pick up another one.

Simply The Best
If your wondering which brand to buy between Leatherman And SwissTool etc. well can I just suggest you watch any programs on Discovery Channel about explorers or adventure sports participants and see which one they chose. I have only seen leatherman.

I personally have owned the PST for about 4years and only recently had the misfortune of chipping the head on one of the screwdrivers from well a little misuse (opening a screw that was to big for the head) I sent it back to leatherman and they not only fixed the driver but sent me a whole new tool in replacement which means all the wear and tear such as a slightly blunt blade are now all gone.

I like the new 20th aniv. Wave so I just bought it along with the P4 which is a cool little keying, lets just hope they serve me as well as the PST has and will continue to do.

Has everything you need
Warning...the knife is sharp! Took it camping and it worked great. Used probably every tool in it. Would recommend for anyone who would rather not spend a lot of money on more expensive swiss army knives out there. A friend of mine has this same leatherman; he got his years and years ago and it's still the only one he takes with him camping.

The First Leatherman in Alaska
I bought my first Leatherman in 1987, and received a second this Christmas. When the only tools you have are those on your person, a stainless steel Leatherman multi-tool is hard to beat. It will not substitute for heavier tools in a standard work environment, but my first tool still looks good after a number of years working in the saltwater environs of coastal Alaska.
