5-0 out of 5 stars Great Trimmer
When I purchased this, I was concerned that being battery operated it would be underpowered. That's not the case at all, it has plenty of power. The battery charge lasts longer than I do, too.

A real pleasure to get away from the cord. The vibration is much less than any other trimmer I've tried.

4-0 out of 5 stars No More Cut Cords!
I agree with what was said in the earlier review. My own comparison is with the 10 year old B&D 22" electric that it replaced. I was impressed in that it gives up nothing in terms of power. I used it today for the first time on my 150' of hedges and lots of other bushes, especially hugh forsythias. It did all the trimming with no sign at all of battery fatigue. It's much smoother in operation than the old one. There are two things I didn't like about it. The forward handle is made so that it's only comfortable to hold at the top and not at the sides as in the old models. Also, as was said, there's not a lock-on switch. You have to hold the switch on. They did that, no doubt, for safety reasons, but that's probably where the fatigue enters. Many folks will rig up a clip to achieve the same thing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good trimmer
Black and Decker has a few cordless hedge trimmers so I was a bit confused which to try. This was their latest model and boasted a 40 minute run time so I decided to go for it.
The product worked great. I charged the battery the full 6 hours required when you first get it. What's nice about it is after the initial charge the full charge time is 3-6 hours, but the unit can left charging indefinitely without damaging the unit.
The unit performed admirably. It cut beautifully and the charge lasted the 40 minutes. The Hedge Hog breezed thru my bushes with ease. If I have two criticisms, they are 1) you have to keep your hand squeezed on the handle while using it - not a big deal cuz your hand is there anyway, and 2) (and more importantly) the unit isn't light. After about fifteen minutes or so, my arms got a bit fatiuged.
Still, the criticisms are minor, and I'd highly recommend this unit to anyone who doesn't want to deal with the gas or electric powered models. ... Read more

Leave no hedge untrimmed: The 24-inch Hedge Hog eats up branches up to 3/4-inch thick without blinking. The dual-action blades work smoothly and quickly with less vibration, further dampened by the full-sized, three-sided soft-grip comfort handle. A lock-on switch prevents trigger-finger fatigue, and the lock-off eliminates accidental starting. Electric power is environmentally friendly and quieter, too, plus it’s always ready when you are. The super long reach of the 24-inch dual blades is a nice switch from shorter varieties, meaning less dangerous reaching for the user. No assembly is needed: Open the box, plug it in, and trim.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

  • Pre-hardened, rust resistant steel blades stay sharp longer
  • Exclusive blade design cuts branches up to 3/4"

5-0 out of 5 stars Cuts thick woody bushes like they were butter!
I bought the B&D HS2400 electric hedge trimmer after a fiasco with B&D's CHT500 cordless trimmer. (See my review of it.) It's already assembled, so there's nothing more to do besides remove it from the box and plug it in.

The handle is comfortable and easy to hold both horizontally and vertically. Its good balance makes it very easy to handle. The trigger is large and easy to depress. The lock is a bit difficult to engage, and I find it easier to just hold the trigger down.

But, this trimmer really shines when it comes to cutting. I have about 100 feet of honeysuckle bushes that grow to be about eight feet tall every year. They're incredibly woody and difficult for smaller trimmers to cut. The first thing I did with the HS2400 was to sweep it across the honeysuckles about five feet off the ground. It cut through them like butter. The dual-action blades virtually eliminate vibration, and I easily guided the trimmer through the bushes. The 24" blade reduces the amount of time you spend trimming as well as helping you make a straighter cut. The trimmer worked equally well on the front sides. I cut through those bushes faster than my kids could stack the branches. My wife was cutting the front sides with our old B&D 16" trimmer and it was faster for me to just do the whole thing with the HS2400.

Black & Decker states that the trimmer can cut up to 3/4" branches, and it does that with ease. Most trimmers struggle when they reach their maximum capacity, but the HS2400 just lops them right off. If you don't hold the trimmer steady, a few branches might be a bit ragged at the ends, but it's easy to trim them again to clean up the edge.

The hook that holds the extension cord to prevent it from being yanked out of the pigtail is a bit small and the opening a bit tight. I'd like a slightly larger opening and a larger hook, but it holds the cord. In about three hours of use, it only fell out once. It would be easy enough to use a small PVC cable tie or rubber band to improvise a different way of securing it, but I don't think it's worth the effort.

Please keep the extension cord in mind when using an electric trimmer. Buy a bright orange or yellow cord. In my opinion, despite their neon color, the bright green ones are less noticeable in bushes and grass. Also, buy twice as much cord as you think you'll need. You want to have about fifteen feet of cord next to you, and patio furniture, trees, and other obstacles inevitably reduce the amount you have available. Spending an extra two dollars for another fifty feet will ensure that you don't have to worry about your extension cord. Plus, you'll be especially glad of the extra length if you have to trim the other side of a hedge. Trust me--my old fifty foot cord has two sets of electrical tape where my old trimmer bit through it because it was too difficult to manage a shorter cord.

Update: I finished the hedges today and, although I was careful not to hit my chain link fence, I didn't notice a bean plant holder. The trimmer doesn't cut through 1/8" steel rod. In fact, it torqued one of the teeth so badly that the blade is ruined. My fault. I'll see if it can be repaired cheaply enough, but if it can't, I'll buy another one. That's how much I like this trimmer.

HS2400 summary:
Cuts incredibly well, even 3/4" woody branches (but not steel)
You rarely need multiple passes.
Well-designed and balanced.
Easy to maneuver. No vibration.
Comfortable handles and easy to use horizontally and vertically.
No vinyl blade sheath (unlike the CHT500--why?).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Electric Hedge Trimmer
Like the other reviewer, I am exclusive to electric garden tools. This Hedge Hog is the longest and most powerful hedge trimmer made and it is by far my favorite tool. It makes light work of most shrubs and really allows for precise sculpting of shrubs. I have even used it to chop up branches in my compost bin, which it was able to do with aplomb. The controls are safe, and I find that tying the extension cord a second time around the handle leaves it secure. (The danger with the extension cord becoming unplugged is if the tool is locked "on" when you plug it back in.)

My only complaints are that this Hedge Hog is slightly heavy and I wish that it were 36" long when I'm trimming bigger hedges. Nevertheless, this is so far the biggest size they make. I would buy it again and again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of garbage
This trimmer works great when you get it home. But after a few uses, the teeth wear down, get pitted and dinged. I keep my tools clean, and it was disheartening after each use of this trimmer to note the progressive wear on the supposedly hardened steel teeth. I probably wasted all that time cleaning it after each use because it ended up in the trash so quickly. This hedge trimmer is essentially disposable.

After 3 uses, you start to learn which teeth won't chew through a branch. After 6, it won't cut anything bigger than 3/8 inch. After 10 uses, it won't cut through 1/8 inch. A couple more uses, and it won't cut through tall grass.

Unlike other B&D models, you can not buy replacement blades for this model. Why not, you ask? I suspect it's the dual action design, which means it'd be tricky to tune the blades if you did replace them. And what's more, they're not really something you can sharpen yourself. The teeth have an odd spur on them, so a file won't do the trick.

But let's say you're like me. You sharpen your shovels, you sharpen your drill bits, you sharpen your saws, so you take a stab at sharpening the trimmer teeth. What you'll discover after the first few strokes of a file is that the steel is soft. The good news is, it won't take long to sharpen each tooth. The bad news is, there's 42 of them, and each one has two sides. But the deal killer is that the edge won't last more than a few uses.

Get a different model, even if it's a couple of inches shorter. You'll save time and money in the long run. And remember, a dull trimmer is a dangerous trimmer, especially if you're on a ladder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and easy to use.
It seemed to me that this would be a big improvement over the manual hedge trimming I had done in the past. I was right. This machine is terrific. This is especially true because some of my shrubs are older and a bit overgrown with larger branches (I am NOT a master gardner). This machine goes through the small stuff like it isn't there. You caan sculpt your bushes quite easily and quickly with this great device.

I had no trouble with the trigger, buttons, or the cord. I like the safety features that help me keep my hands far away from the moving blades.

This is one of my favorite tools. It makes trimming your hedges a breeze.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than other electrics, but not ideal
This B&D Hedge trimmer does a far better job trimming hedges/shrubs than any other electric I have ever used. It's main feature is that it can handle branches much thicker than most competitors. (I find it very useful when trimming my out-of-control holly trees.) However, don't expect this to be a tool sturdy enough to pass down to your grandkids.

When doing trimming of twig-size branches, it does about as well as any electric; you just pass it over the branches, and they just fall away. However, that is work you could be doing quite easily with a good pair of manual trimmers.

Where this really shines is with the thicker stuff. Because of the way the blade is designed, it makes steady work of any branch that will fit in it's substantial blade. However, while you are cutting these thick, woody branches, it doesn't exactly cut them like a pair of scissors; instead, it shakes like crazy while sawing away at the branch. You just have to keep applying gentle pressure to the branch (you don't want to stall the motor), and hold on tight. It isn't going to wrench itself out of your hands, but it may wander off target unless you keep a firm grip.

Many other electrics cannot handle branches larger than about a 1/4". (They claim 3/8, but who are they kidding?) This one can handle branches up to a shade over 1/2" without too much trouble. If you expect to do a lot of large branches, you really need to get a gas trimmer. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

There are lots of reasons to choose electric power tools over gas: they’re cleaner, quieter, and all-around better for the environment. There’s one big reason not to: tripping over (and perhaps cutting) the cord. This compact but surprisingly tough little trimmer solves the cord problem with a powerful 14.4-volt rechargeable battery that runs up to 40 minutes between charges. (That’s enough time to trim up to 1000 square feet of hedge and shrubs.) Without a cumbersome electrical cord to drag around, even big jobs feel easier, and you’ll never need to mess with oil, gas, or tune-ups. The extended 22-inch trimming blade provides a smooth, level cut and features dual action to minimize vibration, increase user comfort, and diminish fatigue. Weighing only 6 pounds, this unit feels even lighter, and it’s superbly balanced in the hand. Despite being battery-powered, the motor provides plenty of torque to chew handily through branches up to 3/8 of an inch in diameter. This trimmer is covered by a full two-year warranty. --Mary Park ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product
I decided to get my husband this trimmer for father' day after seeing him trim our hedges with a small pair of pruning shears. He loves it!!! As stated, it comes fully assembled. Just get an extension cord, plug it in, and go for it. It was light weight but not flimsy. He couldn't believe how easy it was and how fast it was. We didn't know why we had not purchased one earlier. The price is great, the product is great and you will love it. 3-0 out of 5 stars Tiring for extended use - no lock on
This is a nice trimmer but it loses two stars from me because it can't be locked on, you must grip the switch at all times or it shuts off. This makes it tiring for any extended use as the switches are not very ergonomic and awkward to turn on again after it turns off because you had to change your hand position slightly.Of course you can defeat this with a sliding hose clamp or loop of string (just like you have to do on lawnmowers nowadays), but IMO not allowing a lock "on" is a stupid design "feature".Thank you, lawyers for crapping everything up. ... This amped-up version of the classic Hedge Hog trimmer features a patented blade tooth design to help cut through thicker branches. Smaller-scale trimmers are fine for new growth, but this one helps clean up overgrown and older hedges and shrubs, handily cutting through branches up to 3/4 of an inch in diameter. Surprisingly lightweight and comfortable in the hand at only 6 1/5 pounds, the trimmer runs off a powerful 2.8 amp motor that generates a fast-cutting 3,300 strokes per minute. The trimming blade is made from pre-hardened steel for durability, rust resistance, and long-lasting sharpness. Measuring 22 inches, the blade provides even cuts and an extra-long reach, so you don’t always have to climb a ladder to reach the top of the hedge, while its dual action minimizes vibration, increases user comfort, and diminishes fatigue. When turned on, a locking safety switch allows continuous operation without holding down a trigger; turned off, the switch prevents accidental start-ups. This lightweight, quiet, and fast-cutting electric tool makes trimming small shrubbery almost effortless. Weighing in at only 4-1/2 pounds, it feels exceptionally comfortable in the hand and prevents user fatigue, even on big trimming jobs; its smaller size, maneuverability, and ease of handling make it especially appropriate for sculpting ornamental bushes or topiary. The unit features a medium-length 16-inch blade made from pre-hardened steel for durability, rust resistance, and long-lasting sharpness. The body is made from sturdy, molded plastic with a two-handed grip for extra stability without extra effort. The integral handle has a locking safety switch; turned on, it allows continuous operation without holding down a trigger, and turned off, it prevents accidental start-ups. A cord lock feature prevents accidental unplugging, while handy brackets keep the cord looped out of your way. 1-0 out of 5 stars HS 1010 Hedge Hog
I agree with two out of three of the other reviews. The Hedge hog runs smooth, but does not cut small growth. It just smashes them, and leaves the stem hanging on the bush. This is probably due to the very short (1/8") cutting blades. I don't like to be negative, but just wanted to alert others to this problem. I bought a Black&Decker HT-2000 with the old fashioned large blades, and it works great.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm in love with a beautiful Hog!
I was in trouble...with all the rain we've had the vegetation was overtaking the house...in came the Hog to save the day! In just a short period of time it cut things down to size. Three days work was reduced to three hours! Cool features of this machine include the absence of a cord (so that you don't accidentally cut off the main cord), choice of auto and manual power (great when you're starting to fatigue) and the ability to cut thick, woody stems (of which I had plenty). Magically, the leaves flew off the bushes and now my yard is littered with piles of leaves which my hubbie has volunteered to clean up.
This little Hog turned hard yardwork into fun ....it's well worth the money.
I would highly recommend it to anyone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Black & Decker Hedge Hog HS1010
This double action hedge trimmer is no better than one I bought 20 years ago. (And Quit using after half a season). The reason for the displeasure is that it does not cut the branches off cleanly, it chews or nibbles at them until some of them fall off. As with all their other models the blade moves much too fast. The double action models only add to the problem.

Last summer I used a German manufactured hedge trimmer that operated much slower. It had llolypop shaped tines that actually held the branches forcing them into the blades rather than away. This trimmer worked with ease and cut branches of all sizes on hedges and various types of bushes and ornamental trees. Unfortunately this unit was a European model that operated on 220 volts and they do not manufacture a 110 volt model for export.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor design--chews branches off
I am a retired quality control manager and impatient with tools that don't work. I returned this hedge trimmer after using it one half hour to cut tender new growth less than 1/8 inch diameter. As you sweep the trimmer bar across the hedge, the branches bend while the blade chews away at them. Many looked like they were torn off. It's bad for the hedge and hard work as you have to go back over and over the same place.
I gritted my teeth and bought a Little Wonder 19 inch elecric hedge trimmer that cost three times as much, but it is a joy to use--the branches fall away, cut cleanly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Little Machine
A nice little machine, but the plug keeps coming out. A 50 cent piece of plastic would fix that. Even after someone telling me about it, I forgot. When it stopped all of a sudden, the only thing I could think of was that I had tripped a fuse. I went downstairs, but none were tripped. Then I remembered about the cord. It had moved out only about a half inch, so it did not look unplugged. Probably had to re-insert it 20 times during a one hour trimming session. That is my only complaint. ... Read more

This quiet, clean-running cordless tool is ideal for anyone who needs to clip tall, awkwardly-sited, or hard-to-reach hedges and shrubs. It effectively trims to a height of ten feet, thanks to two interlocking components that form an extended pole shape. The hardened, machined steel 18-inch cutting blade is exceptionally durable and features dual action to minimize vibration and increase user comfort. The 180-degree pivoting head adjusts to five different positions for hedges both high and low and effectively trims branches up to 7/16-inch in diameter. A powerful 18-volt NiCad battery provides 2400 revolutions per minute and runs the trimmer for up to 50 minutes between charges, as well as starting up effortlessly with the press of a trigger. (A locking switch enhances safety by preventing accidental starts.) Without a cumbersome electrical cord to drag around, even big jobs feel easier, and there are never any oil, gas, or tune-ups needed.

The unit assembles and disassembles in seconds using locking collars to join the power end to the cutting head. A carry bag allows for easy transport and storage at home or to professional worksites. Also included are a battery charger and blade cover for increased storage safety. This trimmer is covered by a two-year warranty in addition to a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. It weighs just over eight pounds and measures 78 inches long when put together. --Mary Park ... Read more
