Cordless screwdrivers are a wonderful invention, but some jobs around the house still require that extra control a conventional screwdriver can provide. The 3.6-volt, three-position Black & Decker 9078 screwdriver combines the best of both. As a power screwdriver, the unit operates at 180 rpm and offers up to 40 in./lbs. of torque, with 24 settings. A torque control collar allows the operator to match the torque to the job, reducing unwanted strips. A pistol grip and three-position handle allow the screwdriver to fit into some pretty tight spaces, while a spindle lock (located on the forward/reverse switch) allows the operator to use the unit as a conventional, manual screwdriver when necessary. This is especially helpful when starting and finishing screws. The screwdriver comes with five double-ended bits. Each locks securely into place and is easy to remove. The handle is also easy to adjust with just the push of a button. All in all it's a pretty handy little tool.--Carl Thress ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful, rugged, but shy of perfect
At this price point for an electric screwdriver, I have one recommendation: temper your expectations. With that I am happy to say that this screwdriver exceeded my tempered expectations.

Pros:
Even at its bargain price, this screwdriver comes with a torque clutch and a folding body style. The thick black and orage plastic casing make the screwdriver very tough. Scoffs and scratches are usually not noticeable. The speed is great, sometimes too great, such as when driving a screw into a plastic drywall anchor, where too fast may soften or melt the plastic.

To my surprise, this screwdriver is fairly powerful. I don't know how much more powerful an electric screwdriver needs to be. I've driven 2" long screws into studs with this thing and it has never stalled. In fact, sometimes the screwdriver's power make it difficult to hold without folding it at an angle to get more leverage.

Cons:
The one serious complaint I have is with the torque clutch. With a setting that goes from 0-20 I would have expected a lot of adjustability. But even at its lowest torque setting, the clutch on my screwdriver has rarely slipped. I don't know if this is a problem with my particular unit, but it's very annoying to have to hand-tighten screws in fear of stripping them.

And from the "have the cake and eat it too" department, I wish that the screwdriver is smaller and lighter. It is not huge but it is larger and heavier than I expected.

Buy overall, this is a great screw driver. If the torque clutch had a more effective range of adjustment I would have given it 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great screwdriver for daily use
I have just bought my third B&D 3.6 volt screwdriver because I want to have a large shop and wanted to have one available in several areas. This is a very good screwdriver. Not too large but great for getting into smaller places or just to carry around. The power is much better than the 2.6 volt ones. It will handle most every day wood working for the weekend worker. If you want to do heavy duty work move up to the big brother of the 3.6 volt. I like the design, looks and overall quality.

2-0 out of 5 stars good design, limited power
This is a really good design for a cordless screwdriver, but it runs out of battery power very quickly. Don't plan on it for big jobs. Since the battery is contained in the screwdriver, all you can do is plug the whole unit into the charger. I had one of the older models from black and decker and although you couldn't fit it into tight places, you could swap out batteries and keep on working.

5-0 out of 5 stars small package with great power
This is a great cordless screw driver. It is small and powerful with 40 in-lbs of torque. The combination directional on-off switch location is perfect. It also has a no run middle position so it doesn't turn itself on in your back pocket. Used it to take apart my forced air heater and some window hinges. Power and run time was good. Its battery is built in so you just can't throw in a spare battery pack if you run it down. Since I liked this screwdriver so much and it is so inexpensive I bought another one after having the first one for a month. Now if I run the first one down, I have another to take its' place. The clutch works great and I like the adjustable settings a lot. The settings with the automatic spindle lock allow me to sink the screw and then with the power off tighten the screw that extra quarter turn. Yes, I could of bought the 7.2 volt Dewalt ... but I found it too heavy and awkward, not what you want unless your into building muscles or pretending you are Tim the tool man. My advised is buy this one. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Product Just don't misplace your charger
The other reviews pretty much cover this tool with one large exception. Make sure you never misplace your charger. The instruction manual gives no info at all on this vital part and Black and Decker's website is just as helpful. The part # is 5102293-09 if you need to buy a new one, but you won't find it listed at the website, or any info about it.

I will now continue my quest for some helpful description of this most valuable part.

5-0 out of 5 stars STOP SCREWING AROUND!
We've all been there. There's that teeny screw just under the sink...just under the counter...just out of reach behind the wall...positioned just so. All it needs is a turn or two.
But it's impossible to reach. Not anymore. This is undoubtedly the handiest screwdriver we've come across---a three-position cordless ditty made by Black & Decker. The 2.4-volt rechargeable screwdriver offers the advantages of a traditional screwdriver when in the in-line position; switch to the middle- or right-angled position, and the extended, narrow bit holder reaches those ... hard-to-reach places. That's just for
starters. There's also a spindle lock that offers greater control when starting or finishing screws, and allows for manual use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool
This screwdriver is lightweight and easy to position in your hand. It's easy to recharge and goes along way on each charge.Switching from Phillips to Flathead is a breeze.I don't know how I ever got along without it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great starter kit
I am 22 and just got married a month ago.I got the tool set about a month before I got married and I have used it a hundred times since. The tools aren't the most heavy-duty things out there but they are a perfect starter set that will last for a long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Price is Right?!
I like this kit a lot, it is great for new home owners!. If you are planing to do some "DO IT ON YOUR OWN" stuff just buy this one.

The storage stationis made of plastic but it feels strong. It can be used as a small work bench!

The bonus 100 piece bits are great too!!.
All the tools are good for starters. If you are planing to upgrade you may have to look further.

Amazon.com Review

The Black & Decker FireStorm drill kit is a sensible choice for the home handyperson who requires strong, dependable performance at a reasonable price. The drill runs at speeds from 0 to 800 rpm--with a maximum of 115 inch-pounds of torque. At 1-1/2 amps, the battery also provides more power than other consumer-grade cordless drills and snaps on and off easily and securely. In addition, a 24-position clutch provides all the torque adjustment you'll need to handle any household project.

One feature we especially appreciate is the one-handed keyless chuck, which is usually found only on more expensive contractor-grade models. Not only does this chuck make changing bits quick and easy, but its all-metal construction also ensures it will have a long, dependable life. Other nice touches include a molded plastic handle with a rubber grip, which gives the user more control, and a well-placed forward/reverse control mechanism that makes it easy to switch directions with your trigger hand. Although this drill's plastic housing isn't as thick as the housing on more expensive models, it also isn't as heavy--in fact, the FireStorm is remarkably lightweight and well balanced.

The drill comes in a sturdy plastic carrying case with a battery charger and one driver bit that fits in a handy slot in the top of the drill. The bottom line? You'll have no problem completing any basic household projects with the FireStorm. If you have major home improvement plans, though, you may want to consider stepping up to a professional-grade model. --Tim Block ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Goes toe to toe with Dewalt.
I Have this 12 Volt model and I use it for drywalling and installing Satellite Dishes, where I have to sink 3 inch lag screws. I also have a Dewalt 14.4 Volt which I also use as a standby in case I forget to charge the batteries on my B&D drill. I have found that the B&D can go toe to toe with my Dewalt 14.4 and alot of times lasts longer than the Dewalt for battery life. Plus the batteries don't cost an arm and a leg like they do for a Dewalt 14.4. And can be obtained at most any retailer. I have mostly B&D tools and use then extensively with outstanding results. I have an old B&D 3/8 inch electric drill with the steel housing that my grandfather owned, which I still use to this day. Some of you people that knock down B&D need to realize that sometimes you get faulty equipment, its that way with anything. That is why they have warranties on them. I just have to say, keep up the good work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Customer Service Outweighs Average Performance
In a previous review I was very harsh about the product. No doubt, that was the result of failing batteries and battery charger. Well, the Black & Decker people deserve a balanced observation. When the charger died I contacted them directly. I was no longer able to access the charger from Home Depot. B&D Customer Service wasted no time sending me a replacement charger within 3 days, and at no expense.

My expectations may be higher than others, and my do-it-yourself activities at home are probably more than most homeowners. Maybe I need an 18-volt cordless drill. So when I rate the 12-volt system as average that is based on my needs and experience. I only wish this 12-volter was as good as the customer service.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a Bang for the Buck
This was my first venture into cordless drills. I relied on the brand name, anticipating a bang for the buck. I am a big-time home, do-it-yourself type. This drill was a severe disappointment. First the drill would not function after about a month. The batteries were charged and the charger worked, but the drill would not drill. Then about 4 months after that (5 months into the purchase) one of the batteries goes dead. I had to buy another one. I need two batteries for the work I do around the house, and that leads me to another complaint. The batteries do not hold their charge for a good amount of time. Finally, yesterday, the charger stopped charging. I went to my local Home Depot to buy another charger, and there were none. I was told to either check out Lowe's and contact Black & Decker. Today, I go online and the Black & Decker cordless drill page won't open up. HHHMMMMMM! Does their IT reflect the quality of their products?

But why do I give it two stars? When the batteries are fully charged this drill can rock 'n roll for a 12-volt. But that's it.

Now here I am with a need to use this drill for an important home project. I can't find another charger in any store and the company web site won't open up for me to access and buy the replacement charger.

Talk about severe disappointment. So now I guess it's off to Home Depot and buy a Ryobi. Home Depot has one model made specifically for them in the same 12-volt range, but it comes with a two-year, in-house (Home Depot) guarantee.

BD, you people reflect the kinds of things that are wrong with customer service in this country today.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unable to handle heavy work
This drill broke on me fairly easily. Upon taking it apart, I found that the gear teeth had broken. Probably best for light use projects.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good balance, Low power
I ordered this from the Net so I didn't get a chance to use it mano a mano. The first thing about the Firestorm is the ergonomics - excellent balance and handling. The downside is the power, or sheer lack of it. This is suitable for light home use and nothing more, and even so it lends itself mainly to masonry, wood and gypsum. Anyone requiring concrete and steel performance could do better with a 14V model or a corded. Price is comparable, although I yearn for the days when I still had my corded Hitachi before it was stolen. ... Read more

The Black & Decker FireStorm drill kit is a sensible choice for the home handyperson who requires strong, dependable performance at a reasonable price. 4-0 out of 5 stars Whether this is a great tool depends...
Whether this is a great tool depends on your needs and expactations .I have one that I've used to renovate three rooms, one room included hanging 16 sheets ot sheetrock (including the ceiling which took approx 60 screws for each panel). The other two rooms had minor sheetrock work and a lot of screwing through wood.

I'm happy with it. My expectations were to get a power driver that didn't break my arm to wield or my bank account to buy. This was the one... even putting many screws into a piece of sheetrock overhead is tolerable weight-wize.

My only advice (as with any driver) is to GET A SECOND BATTERY with your purchase if you are doing continuous stuff like sheetrock (Amazon sells them). I found the fully-charged battery to fully peter out after about 80 screws, which limited my ability on hanging the ceilings to one panel per charging (about 16 hours)... but that's OK... being older and I found I was pretty maxed out on the ceiling work myself about the same time the drill was, so the drill rested and I did wiring. (I'm at this site now to get that second battery).

The Amazon.com price is excellent for this tool. I paid $10 more when I got mine about a year ago. Super Saver shipping makes it a great deal!

3-0 out of 5 stars Black and Decker 9.6 Volt cordless drill
I have had my 9.6 B+D cordless drill for over 2 years.
This drill as you know is one of the many light weights on the
market.
As a screw driver it has served me well.It will even tackle a 2.5
inch number 8 screw without to much difficulty. However as a drill
I find it has no torqe.Anything over 5/16 it stuggles to cope with numerous holes. As a diy tool it,s fine, but you must have a second battery especially if you intend to work all day with it.
Unfortunately over here in England the batterys can cost as much as the drill itself. When you buy a cordless drill whatever the make, think about what a second battery will cost you because the chances are you will need one.
Back to Black and Decker. This drill has lasted well upto now,and I would buy another one, but a higher voltage.A lot of people get excited about Dewalt and Makita etc and I,ve no doubt that they are the best, but if you want a reliable tool with some good
features that you dont have to get a mortgage to pay for, than consider a Black and Decker.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid, strong, big case, missing some features
I decided to purchase the 9.6v model over the slightly smaller ones as I justified in my head that I'm a new homeowner and had numerous remodeling and fix-er-up projects waiting for me.I wanted the power and the battery life that would last me the whole day if need be.

For the novice mindset (forgive me professionals), a cordless drill is a cordless drill and most people only care about battery life, power, and features. So how do I review this?Simple categories:

Pros: Solid construction, feels good in the hand, easy bit replacement, large viewable numbers on clutch, idiot proof charger, long battery life, small slot in base handle to store bit, sturdy case, quick & easy access to forward and reverse modes, great power for the home enthusiast, included bit is philips on one side, flat on the other.

Cons: No battery meter (a feature that is in many B&D models, but not here), case seems to be bigger than it needs to be and a lot of wasted room inside where one could store additional bits, small base makes for drill to be top heavy and will never stand up straight (always laying down), only one included bit that seem short, 9.6v batteries are not the most common stocked in many stores for replacement but are indeed available, large chuck may make it difficult for bit to reach tight areas.I was having a little trouble replacing some cabinets because of chuck size....I really just needed a longer bit to solve this.

Overall, a great standard cordless drill for those occasional jobs about the house that are more involved than just picture hanging.Large size may be difficult for some women to handle.Great power, battery life and sturdy case for the price. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok Product
I bought this saw on ebay for the same price that I could have bought the battery for.I think it is wimpy for any real work other that cutting an occasional pvc pipe or a two by four.It is sure handy to grab this saw and go, instead of running cords and finding the nearest plug.New ones on ebay run less than half of this price

2-0 out of 5 stars battery life sucks
like the compact weight but the battery even though rated 14.4 volts lasts less than 10 minutes of normal use, had to special order to get replacement batteries, would strongly suggest a better quality tool (de walt etc.) for other than a hobby user

2-0 out of 5 stars Battery Eater
I have had experience similar to other users.I'm cutting up a few small plum trees, 6 to 8 inches in diameter at the base an smaller higher up.

The fire storm battery didn't last 10 minutes for me.Instructions were ambiguous. One page says "Charge battery for 3 hours before first use." Another page says "After normal usage, your power pack shuld be fully charged in 3 to 6 hors. If the power pack is run-down completely, it may take up to 6 hours to become fully charged. Your power pack was sent from the factory in an uncharged condition. Before attempting to use it, it must be charged for at least 6 hours."

I returned one saw to my local Black & Decker dealer. Their tool salesman thought the saw should provide better than 10 minutes service and replaced the saw no questions. The second saw provided the same story. After over 6 hours charging time the batery indicated 17.3 volts. After about 10 minuts cutting the battery was down to 13.3 volts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good saw
This is one of the best saws for the price. It works as good as any others I've used and it's handy because the batteries will also fit into my De Walt 14.4 drill. The only complaint is that the De Walt batteries don't fit in the saw very well, and come out really hard once you get them in.The quick attatch for the blades is nice also.Again, you can't beat it for the price.

3-0 out of 5 stars If Not For the Battery...
Really not a bad little saw.Keep in mind, it is not corded and it is not for the contractor. After you get past that, the quick blade change is above average and the saw is unusually light weight for recirpocating saws (compare to a Porter Cable corded). It does eat the 14.4V batteries for lunch, I found it lasts for about 10-15 minutes of heavy duty work. With the six hour recharge, you need several batteries on hand.Still, it is reasonably priced and complements my Firestorm 14.4 collection well.Overall I have been satisfied. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars What the heck Black and Decker
If you are buying the 14.4V Firestorm to go with your other previously purchased 14.4V Firestorm tools (like your drill and circular saw) be warned. For some unfathomable reason Black and Decker uses a different battery for this new reciprocating saw. This means you are stuck with the horrible trickle charger that they supply with the saw and can't share your batteries with your other tools.Black and Decker, what were you thinking!?!?!?!I don't even know if B&D offers a fast charger for this battery or how much or how available replacement batteries are.Batteries and chargers for the other Firestorm tools are interchangeable with Dewalt chargers and batteries and therefore available everywhere.

This appears to be a change with the K models this year. The older 144 model appears to use the same battery as the other Firestorm tools.I have no clue why B&D made this change.Perhaps this is the new battery design for all new Firestorm tools to differentiate them from Dewalt. The new battery is bigger and slightly heavier than the old one (by two ounces.)Perhaps B&D increased the power in the newer model. If so, the increased power is completely negated by the lack of convenience and if you wanted more power you could have always used the bigger Dewalt battery. The newer battery design looks to be shared with all "K" tools so if you buy only the newer K versions you will be OK.

For the rest of us, this is a "NO SALE."I returned mine. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great saw for small jobs, powerless for big jobs
Let me just add a quick review here since I own this saw and have been using it for almost a year now with the rest of my Firestorm cordless powertools.

For small jobs (cutting lots of thin boards, or making just a few cuts on a couple of big boards) this is a PERFECT little saw. The problem is when you've got a big job and need a circular saw for huge boards or a full day of cutting ... this cordless saw cannot do that.

This is the perfect saw if you are a homeowner who does the odd DIY job around the house but does NOT work with powertools every day or even every weekend. If you need a serious circular saw, there are a couple stronger cordless saws out there ... but so far the best circular saws for keeping up with huge jobs are circular saws that use power cords.

1-0 out of 5 stars mislead
I read many of the reviews that pertained to this item before I perchased it. Although many of them stated that the battery that came with the saw wasn't up to par, it wasn't a problem for them because they owned some 14.4V DeWalt tool and the batteries were interchangeable so they would use the DeWalt battery and the saw preformed fine. I own two 14.4V DeWalt drills, one 3/8 in. and one 1/2 in. chuck. This gave me four back-up batteries. It was because of these reviews that I purchased this saw, based on the fact that I could use my other batteries as needed to do a job. Well, the batteries are not interchangeable. They are completely different. I guess Black & Decker has changed their design or something, but they are not the same. My beef is, your picture shows the older style. One with a battery that might interchange with DeWalt. Your pictures and review information is misleading. I also read on my invoice that I can return the item, no questions asked, in its new, unopened container. I didn't (couldn't) descover the problem until after I had opened it. Needless to say, I wasn't happy with my purchase.

1-0 out of 5 stars worthless junk
the battery life makes this saw useless.it makes only 2 or 3 cuts before you notice it loses power.that's absolutely ridiculous.i wasted my money on this tool.

1-0 out of 5 stars battery lasts for 2-3 cuts
This would have been a great tool if the battery lasted.Even though I have four batteries from other Firestorm tools, I still ran out of power very quickly.I ended up having to use my regular plug in circular saw all the time and now I don't even carry this tool in my truck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kickin' little saw
First off, this is battery powered, duh!So don't expect to build a house with just one battery, and don't expect a battery powered saw to hang with a corded one. That said, this is a great little saw.B&D supplied it with a pretty good blade as well.Definately go and get at least another battery. For big projects, I use 3 batteries:One charging, one cooling, and one in the saw. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not so good for Right Handed People
Notice that the open side of the blade faces to the right, unlike most circular saws that face to the left.So if you like to hold the saw with your right hand it is near impossible to see the position of the blade relative to the cut. You have to use the sight window which clogs up very fast with sawdust. It works ok for quick light jobs but forget using it as a big project cutter unless you are left handed. I think this design is more of a gimmick than truly practical.

Amazon.com Review

This kit offers the perfect armload of cordless tools forthe homeowner: drill, circular saw, cut saw, and flashlight, two14.4-volt batteries, a charger, and a case to keep it all in. Thedrill is sturdy and comfortable, has a keyless chuck, andincludes a 24-position clutch for as much torque as you need. Thecut saw is amazingly light, so even the smallest hands will haveno problem keeping control of it. It makes you want to take out awall or prune a tree in the backyard just to exercise your power. The flashlight switches easily from a floodlight to a spot beam. The star of the show, however, is the Firestorm circularsaw. Light, compact, and maneuverable, the tool shows off Black &Decker's patented Sightline window atop the blade guard. A clearwindow offers a straight, bird's-eye view of your cut path tostart and keep you precisely on your cutting line. We liked thissaw especially because it's the first of its kind to come outwith an in-line blade design--meaning the saw's handle is rightbehind the blade. With the line of force directly behind thecutter it's easier to make a true, straight cut. You can't buyall these tools separately for anywhere near the price of thekit, so we think it's a heck of a deal. --Kris Jensen-VanHeste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good tool set for the price
I purchased this tool set to help with the installation of laminent flooring. Other than your basic screwdrivers and an old 9.9V cordless drill/screwdriver, I really had no tools. So here are my thoughts:

Other than the flashlight, all of the tools felt very solid and were not too heavy. They were easy to move and manipulate during the flooring process. So lets go with the tool by tool breakdown:

Flashlight: Eh..so, so. Not very bright and no adjustments to the beam available. Was very light and felt pretty cheapo. Nice to have, but stick with a different source for light.

Electric Saw: The saw had no problems chewing through the laminent flooring. It just kept going and going. The only real problem I encountered was the supplied blade tended to chip the flooring. Would have been nice to have a little bit finer blade supplied, but hey, that was just for my application.

Cut Saw: This little gem saved the day for my project. This workhorse cut through the flooring without chipping it and the cuts were nice and clean. I used it so much in fact, that the original blade it came with is now pretty much as dull as a butter knife. My set came with two blades for this saw and each performed great. Replacing the blades is as simple as pulling back on a lever and taking out and replacing. Great tool here, just great!

Drill: Again, this unit far surpassed my needs with my flooring project. The power of the 14.4V drove the screws for the thresh holds deep into the floor. The drill never bogged down a single time. I also was able to use the drilling feature for all of the wiring for my stereo system. Using a 1 inch wood drill bit, the B & D chomped through the flooring and subfloor without hesitation. It never once slipped or spun out of the chuck.

Overall, this is a great set of tools for the home improvement enthusiast. I'm not real sure of the poor reviews here, or on the single units themselves. But if you are a serious construction worker or contractor, why are you looking at B & D? Aren't there more serious tool options out there for those that earn a living using these tools?

To just have them around the house, you can't go wrong.

1-0 out of 5 stars battery charger
I bought my firestorm 14.4 combo 2 years ago. Then the battery charger burned out. I bought two more ps180 battery chargers for my ps140 batteries. I plugged the batteries in the chargers and within 15 min the chargers burned out.I recommend no one buy a black and decker product because of this battery charger problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it
I've had this set for a while and use it all the time. My electric saw is gathering dust in a cupboard. I suggest you buy the optional charger, it charges in one hour and doesn't overcharge (I burned up one battery and charger before buying it.)
I have a campsite without electricity and have used the saw in building a storage shed, framing for a deck and miscellaneous stuff. The drill I use all the time. I didn't think I'd ever use the cut saw but now that I have it, I wonder how I ever got by without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tools!
For the money these tools are great. They have lots of power. I just built a fort/swing set with them. The saws cut through treated 2x6's with no problems. For occasional use around the house, you can't beat this package of inexpensive tools.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice looking tools but...
This tool kit looks so good when you open the box. The orange color grabs your attention. I also like the handy storage case which is easy to carry and stores the tools well. However, I was frustrated by how slow the charger is - 6 hours to charge up a battary. I also don't like the fact that the charger will actually damage the battary if you leave it charging too long. This needs to be a trickle charge like a Makita. The worst thing is that the flashlight burned out in 20 minutes! I was also underwhelmed with the Sawzall. The Sawzall stalled out when I was cutting through balsa wood? This unit needs more power.

Black & Decker should spend less money on the fancy packaging and more money on power, performance and quality. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not up to a real job
I have used this drill for over 6 months now and I can say that I hate it. Its clutch slips even when screwing into the softest of woods. I have seen a 12v cheap drill run circles around it in the most simple of jobs. I would tell anyone who would listen to go get a Dewalt. My Dewalt 18v can beat anything except for Dewalt's nicer models.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Go Cheap!
The B & D 18v drill w/2batteries was a great buy. And, for over a year, it looked like a wise choice. But then came the problem with the charger -- or one of the batteries.Apparently, a bad battery will kill a charger. So, 2 ruined chargers and one dead (defective?) battery later, I am left with a drill, maybe 1 good battery, but no charger.I'm not taking a chance on another charger. It will likely die as the others -- and that's an answer way too expensive to a problem that probably won't go away. Now I'm doing what I should have done -- pony up a few more $'s for a quality product. And what remains of my B & D drill 'kit' goes to Ebay.

2-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for.
I bought the 18 volt Firestorm drill kit with two batteries and was initially pleased with the price and performance.

After approximately 14 months one of the batteries and the charger both failed. Now I am stuck with a drill, one battery and no way to charge it unless I buy a new charger. Even then, I still would have only one battery.I have learned that the gears in the drill are plastic and the stalling out I read about in other reviews is a common affliction.

Overall, it has not been a purchase that I am happy with, but when you shop price Vs quality you are at risk.My Dewalt 12 volt runs circles around the B&D 18 volt, so draw your own conclusions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tool for the Money
Received this as a gift about a year and a half ago so I didn't have any choice in the matter. But I have been very happy with it every time I use it.Have never had a warranty, quality or performance issue with this drill.

It has good balance considering the battery packs are so heavy. The batteries have plenty of run time for the types of projects I have used it for (hanging curtain rods, blinds, dry wall, drilling holes)
The two speed gearbox is helpful when you are working on smaller projects.Overall I am very pleased with this drill and can't think of anything major that stands out as an issue.

Pros:
Price
18v power
Ease of Use
Level indicator
Two speed clutch

Cons:
Can be too big for small projects
Weight can be an issue when using it for long periods. Those 18v batteries are heavy
Plastic housing (remeber the price)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great 18 Volt Drill/Driver for the money
I've had mine for a little over a month and have read where people have complained about the drill slipping so I took a 1/2" drill bit and ran it to the hilt into a 4X4 several times no wobble or slippage. I did have problems with my Craftsman speedlok set though because the drill bits work best in their own quick release and some of those did wobble. But again standard drill bits worked perfectly and are straight as an arrow. The drill is made by DeWalt or visa versa and the major two differences are the Firestorm uses the new slide on battery packs that give it up to 30% more run time and the DeWalt has 400 Lbs of torque vs. the Firestorm 280 lbs which seems to be plenty of torque for most uses. Over all for the money paid you get a quality product with a 2-year warranty. I did buy the fast multi-volt charger though because $29.90 on E-Bay for a brand new 1 hour fast charger with trickle charge just seemed like a good idea. ... Read more

Black and Decker's ramped up this basic cordless with features even the high-end guys don't have. Its infinite clutch has micro-adjust torque, effortlessly driving a wide range of screws into everything from pine to rock maple. And unlike others in its class (and beyond), this one has a battery indicator that actually lets you know when your battery level is low. But the slickest thing about this drill by far is its electronic level. No more squinting at the bubble—-the level illuminates at all 90 degree angles, guaranteeing you accuracy every time. We like how it feels in hand, thanks to a comfortable rubber overmold and a nicely balanced design. The bonus Gator Grip universal socket is a nifty accessory, fitting odd shapes like a glove. Paired with this great, solid drill, it's a must-have combo for the homeowner and do-it-yourselfer.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

Remember the old, reliable Black & Decker drill your dad kept in his tool shop all those years ago? Other tools would come and go, but he always relied on that shiny silver drill to get the job done, and it did. Well, Black & Decker has brought back that classic styling with its commemorative, polished aluminum, 14.4-volt cordless drill/driver kit. This 85th-anniversary drill may look like a throwback to days gone by, but inside it's as 21st century as they come. An illuminated, electronic level ensures straighter, more accurate drilling. Microtorque adjustments allow the drill to handle a variety of applications. A single-sleeve keyless chuck with automatic spindle lock makes switching bits a breeze. The drill is powered by a matching 14.4-volt battery pack and features a rubber-enhanced grip for better comfort and control. A touch-sensitive trigger provides infinite speed control at either of two gear settings (0 to 350 and 0 to 1,100 rpm), and a rugged, nylon carrying case keeps the drill well protected when taking it on the job. --Carl Thress ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great drill/driver with a Classic look from the 40's-50's
I just bought this drill over the weekend. The classic styling of a drill from the 1940's-1950's is what sold me at first--it's a drill just too good looking to pass up. However, more importantly it is a great tool, with some very 21st century features: an automatic electronic level that tells you when you're holding the drill straight in any of three different orientations, and a battery status LED meter.

There is a wide range of torque settings, so it really does work well as a driver, all the way down to small screws. I used it tonight to assemble a portable laptop table without either stripping or overdrilling the self-tapping wood screws like I have often done in the past. And, drilling power is good for a 14.4V drill. The charger is a nice small 3-hour charging unit that fits over the top of the battery--not one of those clunker fast chargers that come with most cordless units. And, the set comes with a padded carry case and even a polishing cloth (you'll want to keep that aluminum housing shiny!). The only negative I've found is that the forward/reverse switch above the trigger is not quite big enough for my fingers, and it could use a more positive feel when switching positions.

I have a DeWalt 18V hammerdrill/driver that is an absolute beast when it comes to cordless power, but a bit hard to use for more delicate screwdriving jobs, and a corded Milwaukee Hole-Shooter drill that is almost too much to handle at times. This B&D 14.4V rounds out my drill/driver set nicely.

Lastly, although you will pay a bit more for the classic styling--if you're like me, once you see this drill close up you just have to get one. I plan to buy two more as Christmas gifts for my Dad and brother this year.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good tool for light to moderate use.
This is a good cordless drill for light to moderate work around the house. It has adequate torque for most work and the level lights (which light up at angles 90 degrees from gravity) are more useful than I expected.

I wouldn't think of using this drill for building a deck or any serious construction work, but it is a great piece for assembling Ikea-type furniture, hanging piuctures, or basic consturction projects. It seems to fall in line with most Black and Decker consumer tools by providing ~80% of the necessity that Joe 6-Pack needs at a price well below the Makita, DeWalt, Milwaukee crowd.

I think this will be a big hit with the Yuppie-Poser crowd, but that's not to say it's necessarily a bad tool. I had doubts when I saw the vanity polish cloth that came with this drill...I use a high amperage corded drill for serious work anyway, so ultimate capabilities were not my highest priority with this drill. I did think the nice aluminum finish was worth and extra {money]over the standard 14.4V model which I would assume this is based on.

For the money, this drill represents a reasonable value and feels nice in one's hand. It's probably all the drill most people will ever need. Those in a similar budget range who want a bit extra performance may want to check out a SKIL 18V cordless that includes a "stud finder" in addition to the extra power.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buying a drill?... buy something else.
Buying a potential collectors item?... buy this. I must admit I had a rush of nostalgia when I saw this drill (I had one of the originals and it literally served me for decades before I finally killed it), and I raced out a bought one (for considerably more money than it is offered here). Athough it looks like the original, all comparisons should stop there, and as a drill I must say this was a major disappointment. First, the chuck is the cheapest chuck I have ever had on any drill at anytime. I defy anyone to get it tight enough to hold drill bits without slipping in use, on driver bits and holders it's fine. Second, if I had a nickle for everytime I've pinched my finger in the trigger I wouldn't need to worry about making a living using tools. Hard to explain but there is a gap between the metal case and the plastic trigger, and when you pull the trigger the gap opens, and when you let the trigger go my finger is generally in that gap... youch! And finally, the drill cannot stand on it's battery it must be laid down flat. All it would have taken to rectify this was a miniscule adjustment of the angle of the battery to the handle.

When I bought the fore-father of this "look-alike" Black and Decker made industrial quality tools for use and abuse on a daily basis, today they make "consumer products" that happen to include "tools". This drill is a classic example of the poorly designed, poorly made in China junk B&D now try and fob off as real tools. If you want a drill for daily use, buy something else, if you want something that is a potential collectors item buy this. But don't make the same mistake as I did and take it out of the package and use it... it then becomes worthless as both a tool and as a collectors item.

5-0 out of 5 stars Black@ Decker 14.4 Anniversery Drill.
I have had the oppertunity to use this drill a number of times in the past week and use it many as a secondary unit when I am using more than one drill at a time. When I am drilling and filling woodholes with screws I don't like to change out my bits so I find it is very good for putting in screws and does take somewhat of a licking. Good value for the money. 3-0 out of 5 stars Great Light unless you burn out a bulb
I had this for about 1 year when the bulb burnt out.I have been unable to find a replacement since.I went to the closest Black and Decker service center and they did not have one.I could order one and wait and come back. The hours of the store are only M-F 9-5 so stopping by after work is out of the question.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best flashlight I have ever owned.
I've had mine for at least 4 years.I've never had any problems with it.No more buying batteries for flashlights again. No more having to scramble around looking for a flashlight that works when the power goes out.Recently, after 4 years of usage, the battery doesn't last as long and I'm going to have to buy a new one.But that is nothing compared to the amount of money I would have had to spend on normal batteries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Product, have used it for around seven years
The main purpose for this review is to help folks find replacement bulbs.I ordered mine from dewalt.com.Do a search for part number 284847-00.They're $2.34 each. The model number of this flashlight is VP210, which you can also use to find the bulbs.

Replacing the bulbs takes a little twisting to separate the various parts, but it's easy once you have it apart.

I purchased two of these storm lights. I have had them about two years, and have never had a problem with any one of them.
One light I use as an every day flashlight. I have it on my computer desk at all times. I have an extra 3.6 volt battery in the charger at all times.I use the light quite often, and the charge seems too last a week or so. When it runs low, I just switch the battery..It's nice not to grab a flashlight and find that the battery is dead. Now I have to order one for my garage.. This is a great product. Can be used as a storm light, or an everyday flashlight. I recommend this, and give it a 5 stars

I have 3 of these flashlights throughout my house. They have been active for about 1.5 Years without any problems. The LEDs all work properly and the flashlight turns on when AC Power goes off, otherwise, the flashlight is completely off.

Note: The Original Krypton Bulb Type is Philips KPR803, 3.6V, .5A. The replacement bulb sold by DeWalt/Black & Decker is the same as the VP210. The Manual states that the replacement bulb is KPR103 or PR3. These two are available at ...and ... (check ... Hardware too).

5-0 out of 5 stars Alwarys Ready to Go at Peak Power
This cordless vacuum with the VersaPak system is always ready with maximum power. Old cordless vacs would lose their "punch" over time, holding a charge for less time with each use. Keeping an extra 2 VersaPak cells in their own charging stand and the DustBuster in it's charging stand means two things: (1) The vac is ready for any sizeable job, and (2) Two more cells in reserve will allow you to finish ANY job you'd ever tackle with a DustBuster with power to spare. Also, this unit seems to have more power than I'd ever expected from any handheld cordless vac.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fixing the recharging problem with B&D DustBuster
I/ve fixed our problem with the DustBuster not holding a charge and not re-charging as follows: 1) Push release button and remove motor housing from vacuum 2) Gently remove the motor housing cover plate with a small flat bladed screwdriver 3) Remove four screws (two on outside and two on inside) with a long, small bladed phillips screwdriver (note how on/off switch and release button fits before separating housing 4) Turn switch on and let rotor run completely down...rotor will stop 5) Clean all copper with a Q tip and rubbing alcohol (move the switch back and forth to clean under it) Alclhol will self dry 6) Using a regular finger nail file, gently file contact points on motor and then on charging unit (you'll have to depress and hold charging unit contacts with your small screwdriver to make good contact)7) re-assemble the unit and charge overnight. You'll be amazed!!! After doing this, don't store the vac in the charger full time (it decreases battery power just like on any rechargeable appliance; and, let the battery completely run down about once a month then put it in the charger overnight. GGOD LUCK!

5-0 out of 5 stars Blown Away!
When a vac has this much suction power, there has to be an opposite force (i.e., exhaust). Just remember to keep the vac's vents pointing away from what you want to pick up, and use lots of hair spray. The vaccuum power is unsurpassed!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Vac--Low Battery Life
This is a good powerful vacuum, but the VersaPak Interchangeable Batteries have a short lifespan. I have to rush to clean up my car because I only have about five to ten minutes before the batteries run out. After they run out, I have to wait another six hours for them to fully recharge. In other words, I have to charge the batteries for six hours for every ten minutes of use! The batteries also have a memory effect, which means that they would eventually supply enough power for only five minutes max (down from ten minutes max), unless they are fully discharged before recharging, and should be done often. I plan to purchase the gold VersaPak batteries because I heard that they last a lot longer and have no memory. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Portable but Whimpy
This is a handy tool because you can grab it and go anywhere with it to use on weird/odd projects of very small scale. If you try to use it on anything more substantial, you'll find it is very underpowered and you'll go through a lot of batteries. A rotary tool is supposed to be a high-speed device. This VersaPak unit turns very slowly and bogs down easily. This causes you to use more force than you would use normally which drammatically shortens the bit life, especially the cut-off wheels. On one small project, I gave up and borrowed a friend's powered Dremel drill. Wow! What a difference. I now have two rotary tools: powered and this VersaPak.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE tool for trimming dog nails!!!!
This is THE tool for trimming dog nails. Use the coarse
sandpaper wheel on low... Given what groomers charge you for trimming nails
this savings pays for the tool in under a year alone.
You can grind TO the quick instead of slicing INTO it with
a guillotine cutter. I use it and from my experience with it
my vets use it on all their client dogs now too. Cordless
is handy and the batteries hold 250-270 charges.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for all those little Jobs
I just bought one and I was quite impressed. Of couse its not going to be able to perform a huge job(no rotary tool will), but it is great for almost everything else. It cuts and grinds pretty fast, but you have to be patient when its charging. So far though its been able to do every thing I've put it up against

4-0 out of 5 stars Specialized, not limited
The trick to the Wizard is realizing that it is for jobs where no other tool is right, not as a replacement tool. If you try to use it to cut through a lot of material because you don't have an electric saw, you'll be disappointed in both the cutting ability and the charge capacity. (I know I was) However, when I needed to round the edge of a metal plate it was perfect.

I've spent a lot of time figuring out other jobs for it and I've been happy with the results now that I know what to expect. It really seems to excel at working with metal when a smooth finish is needed or the area you need to work in is very tight.

If you don't already have a bunch of VersaPak tools, get the corded version so you don't get stuck half way through a job.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for quick trip jobs.

This is a great tool for quick little chores. There's a million things you can do with it. Other reviews are accurate when they say it has limited power. It's true. (I sort of wish they had made this a two-battery tool). I have a similar tool with a cord and I use that one for longer or heavier jobs. But if you need something to do a quick job or have to go out on the roof or someplace else where power is not readily accessible this is a great tool. Plus it comes with all the little doo-dads most other brands nickel-and-dime you to buy separately. The carrying case is very handy and has room for all the included accessories and more. (That's an amazing feat, by the way. Most tools that come in a case don't allow any room for accessory expansion. This one has plenty of space. Even enough for several extra batteries as well).

One thing you can do to help with the power problem is to buy a few of the "Gold" battery packs which have NIMH batteries instead of NICD. These really do last longer. I have replaced all my silver batteries (the ones that come with the tools) with the gold ones. They are available at places like Target and hardware stores and cost a little more but are worth every penny.

The Versa-Pack system is brilliantly convenient. I currently have four tools and two different flashlights that use the versa-pack batteries and I find it very convenient to use the same chargers for all the batteries. If the screwdriver battery dies, I steal one from the flashlight while I charge the other. It works great. So, once you buy several versa pack tools (most of which come with chargers) then you have several chargers to destribute. I keep one in the garage, one on the workbench, one in the truck and one in my job box. Anywhere I go I've got a charger ready to go. There's also a 12v car charger available and it works great. Another tool idea- the versa-pack snake light goes with me to every job, if you get a versa pack tool you will definitely also appreciate the snake light.

Good luck and happy shopping. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cordless Drill Mania survivor
Ok Ok , I admit it...I was a cordless drill junkie. At first it was the 12v high, then the 18v rush!!!!

Well, all went well until that dreaded day when the batteries wouldn't hold a charge anymore. That day when I came to gripes (yes , gripes) with forking out $60 to $85 for batteries that also had poor lifetimes written all over them. Let's face it, the drill gets used maybe once a month and spends the rest of the time being charged with the usual "delta V" or , in the cheaper models, "V threshold" charge techniques. The NiCad batteries just sit there, essentially being topped off when the charge declines. This does not make for a long lifetime for this battery chemistry. (those drills are in a box with their dead batteries...too expensive to throw away!!).

That being said, the VPD850 offers a good quality, medium dutydrill that uses inexpensive 3.6v NiCad batteries ($15) that can be used in other BD products. I have found that practically all my heavy work can easily be done using a corded drill (yes, CORDED) with the VPD850 handling the lighter jobs. This is a surprisingly well-designed, good torque 7.2v drill with its only problem being that you can't find it anywhere! I was both amazed and pleased that Amazon markets this. I have looked everywhere. It has plenty of torque and charge for a wide variety of household jobs. Admit guys... do you REALLY need a high-powered cordless drill? Their starting torque is a fraction of a corded drill. And if you do buy a corded drill...don't skimp. My Milwaukee Magnum Hole Shooter has been thru many big jobs and runs like new.

Put this in your toolbox before B&D discontinues it. I can't blame them. It really could take away a chunk out of the lucrative higher voltage drill product line.

It took a lot for me to say this but, LOW VOLTAGE IS GOOD!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Light-Duty Drill/Driver
This is an excellent light-duty drill screwdriver.Rated at 7.2 volts, it is not a full time use tool, better for the weekend user or light duty task.

This drill has some very nice features: A light, to help when drilling in dark areas, with a separate on/off switch. The battery level indicator keeps you informed as to the charge left in the batteries. The keyless chuck is almost stanard with home use drills. The two speed operation allows for both a drill speed and a driver speed.

Powered by the VersaPak batteries, which are interchangable with other Black and Decker VersaPak tools, the charging of the batteries with the included charger (I now have several spares). A nice system.

If you need a commercial quality drill that you will use much of your day every day, you need to look at heavier duty products. If you need a drill for home (and a high power screwdriver), this drill, in my opinion can't be beat. ... Read more
