2-0 out of 5 stars Disposable but comes with batteries
I actually use this thing ALL the time. It's super light-weight and handy for all sorts of SMALL projects. So why only 2 stars?

First, the manufacturer claims that you can scroll cut 1-inch and cut up to 2-inch wood. They have got to be kidding. About the most I would recommend would be 3/8" wood. 1/8" to 1/4" is more its comfort zone. The batteries wouldn't even last through cutting a single 2-by-4 (which is only 1-1/2" on a side) assuming you had the patience. Yes, I have a big recip saw.

Cutting anything large you will run into its first serious flaw. If you break a blade off, most likely, you cannot remove the broken-off part. Trust me, I took the entire thing apart, cut, pounded, and filed before I realized this. Thus, my first one went in the trash after about 3 uses. Lesson: You have to be especially sensitive to blade dimensions. For example, the DeWalt blades (ironically = Black and Decker) are a few thousandth's thicker and won't ever come out if you break them off. This leaves you with trying to find blades on the small side.

Starting with my second one of these tools, I have been especially careful about blades, but I have not found a good manufacturer of undersized shank blades. As a result, I go through blades like crazy.

The next major flaw with this tool is that the gearbox is a simple worm gear with a peg in it. Sawdust and especially drywall dust will mix in with the grease in the gear and jam it up. Then it's take-apart time, again.

Another weakness is that the safety is much more difficult to press than the trigger. It's also in an awkward position which causes a lot of fatigue and sore hands. I remove the trigger on mine which is significantly more dangerous, but significantly less difficult to use.

Finally, like all the VersaPak tools, the batteries do have memory and only last a few years.

As a result, after using several of these for several years, I give it 2 stars. It is an incredibly handy tool, but unfortunately, no one makes a quality "micro-SawZall" which is what this really is. The saving point for this otherwise poor product is that it comes with 2 batteries which are worth about twenty bucks, so the real cost of this tool is also about twenty bucks which is a little more consistent with its durability.

4-0 out of 5 stars For it's intended purpose, it's great
IF you use this tool for its intended purpose, it works perfectly. We call this a "drywall tool" and it is mainly used for cutting outlet boxes in drywall, but also for light cutting duties like door framing, small crafts works (we used it to build a bird box), and other assorted items. I don't think the claim by the manufacturer that it is for outdoor use with trees and branches is very valid though - it is a reciprocating saw, and moves the branches too much while cutting. The batteries seem to work fine and hold their charge, at least until you start to punish the saw with heavier, thicker woods, then it peters out. We used this saw once to cut patterns in some shelving wood that was pretty thick, and halfway through the job we had to switch to a corded jig saw to finish the job.

It is light, easy to handle, and for its intended uses (drywall, small wood cutting, detail cutting) it is pretty much perfect.

4-0 out of 5 stars Light weight and versatile
I have used this several times to do small projects like cutting out cat doors and holes in furniture for electrical cables. The saw works great. However the batteries don't hold the charge as long as they promise and the chargers are starting to go flaky. You have to stick your finger in the charging unit to manipulate the anodes and diode positions. So be sure the saw is ready before preparing to use it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Small Reciprocating Saw
This is a decent small reciprocating power saw. I've had one for a few years. It's useful for apartment dwellers and homeowners who may do occasional small fix-up projects. It's great for cutting holes in drywall for electrical switches, outlets, etc (I used it a lot when installing a home theater system last year). The portability is a real plus for this type of work. I've also used it to cut wood, metal, and plastic. Not a pro tool, but could be handy for drywall installers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Little projects
This is not a replacement for a real saw, and I don't think it was made to be. It cuts short and thin peices of wood 2X4's, but is no match for a longer piece of wood. And about cutting tree branches, it's a recroprating blade, so the branch ends up moving with the blade and not cutting. I actually do use it quite frequently, but still lug out my curcular saw if I'm making more than 2 cuts in something.

This is handy to have for a quick cut. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

When it comes to versatility, few tools can match the Black & Decker MT1203B cordless multitool featuring interchangeable drill/driver, jig saw, and sander/polisher heads. Each attachment locks securely into the ergonomic base quickly and with little effort. As a drill/driver, the multitool features a 24-position, keyless chuck with variable speeds ranging from 0 to 700 rpm. An electric brake stops the chuck in less than one second, for even better control. The jig saw features a tool-less quick-clamp blade changing system, a 45 degree bevel, and a blade support roller for more accurate cuts and a longer blade life. It cuts through wood, thin-gauge sheet metal, plastic, or composite tile, with speeds ranging from 0 to 3,000 spm. As a sander/polisher, the multitool works much like Black & Decker's Mouse sander. Its hook-and-loop fastening system makes accessory changes quick and easy, while the included detailing pad provides a fine finish in even the tightest spaces. --Carl Thress ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Seems like an awsome deal!
While I never used the product mentioned, I own a Black and Decker 18v drill and am totally satisfied. Considering all the tools, this product seems like a real score for the price. I would love a gift like this...

At 700 RPM and 12v, the drill might only be useful for light to medium duty work (cutting doorknob holes or drilling into metal seems like it would be pushing it) but for easy work like making holes in the wall to hang stuff or assembling Ikea furniture it should be adequate. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars drill bit slippage galore
this thing couldn't hold a drill bit if it's life depended on it. it's been relegated to driving screws with the hex head.

3-0 out of 5 stars Drill parts problems
The Black&Decker drill 04A (with 1350 rpm) operates with brushes against the motor. When they wear out parts like these are hard to find - if not impossible. The drill is two years old and has performed beautifully until now and I cannot find the part that is worn out...

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for home
I got this tool for Christmas 2001 and I've used it a lot. I have used it for a variety of home repair uses and found it to be very well suited for those projects such as furniture assembly, hanging curtain rods, hanging blinds, bathroom fixtures such as towel racks, hanging flower boxes with larger screws into my home. Batteries work fine and last a reasonable time. I have not tried anything super heavy duty. I am very pleased witht this and plan to buy one for my sister as a house warming gift. It is heavy enough for everything I've tried but light enough to be easy to handle.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough drill for a serious home repair person,
I bought this after Christmas and was snagged by the price. Only Craftman comes close to this price for a 12v.

I needed to drill and torque down a banister. After charging both batteries (over 6 hours for both). I started on the project but the drill lacked the needed torque for the lag bolts and the batteries were quickly depleted and needed another charage.

The real issue of a serious drill is torque and "Durability" of the battery(s)... With this B&D the battery charge took a very long time and then the batteries were not, using the definition for "durable" > "able to exist for a long time without significant deterioration".

IF you are a serious a serious home repair person spend the extra [price] and move up to B&D 14.4volt Firestorm Drill - both torque and battery durablity will be significantly better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great small tool for small jobs!
I had been looking at drills for a while in order to do those small jobs around the house, such as hanging pictures and shelves. I didn't feel it was necessary to get a large drill with many attachments for these types of jobs. When I came across this drill/driver I was absolutely thrilled! This tool is very easy to use and small enough that it doesn't take up too much storage space when not in use. Additionally, the cost of the tool is very affordable. I highly recommend this product!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for light to medium applications.
The driver feels very solid and nice in your hand. It comes with 4 hex-shank bits - a medium philips, medium flathead, 3/16 and 1/16 drill bits, which should be fine for most jobs. While there is plenty of torque for drilling, there is no torque range adjustment, so you'll have to be careful not to overtighten screws. For that purpose, it has an intuitive manual spindle lock that clicks firmly into place, allowing you to use it like a regular screwdriver.

The bit holder shaft has a convenient quick connect sleeve. You simply pull back on the sleeve insert or remove the bit. The bits have a groove at the end to keep them in the shaft when you work, solving the common problem that I always run into previous power screwdrivers and drills, where for various reasons, the bit gets stuck in the hole or screw when I pull away.

The handle has cartridge style battery pack. Also included with the drill/driver are 4 AA batteries, 20 screws, and 20 plastic inserts (for dryway)-- everything you need to get started. It comes with a full 2-year home use warranty.

I really like this unit. It was very inexpensive, does the job, has the fit and finish quality that one expects from Black and Decker, and has an ergonomic look and feel.

While it would have been nice for this drill/driver to run a bit faster (it runs at only 130 rpm versus the more desirable 180/rpm) and have a torque adjustment ring for worry free screw driving, I think the price makes up for it considerably.

Overall, the AD600 is an excellent value. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great 18 Volt tool kit
My kit is very similar but not quite the same it's the FSC618K-2

Anyway I've read some reviews that say the chuck on the drill can't hold a bit at all and its only real use is as an 18-volt screwdriver. I've run a 1/2" bit to the hilt into a 4X4 several times just to test it, and there was no slippage at all. I'm not really sold on the pop off chuck, but it has saved time when I was building some books shelves recently. But I would say that 280 lbs. of torque is plenty for most applications, but have to admit that I am a novice and use the drill/driver around the house. I've only had it a little over a month but have played around with it, and am very impressed with it. Especially when compared to most of the other 18 volt drill/drivers out there. The circular saw cuts 2X4 with no problem and I have used it to cut about 10, 1"X6 "shelf's to length with plenty of power left over. The Cut Saw is just cool. I haven't had time to use it much but in your hands it feels as if it has enough power to do just about anything you might need it to do. The vacuum is a step up from the basic dust buster does a fine job and has great battery life. The flashlight is bright and I've used it to drain the partially used batteries before recharging. My kit is a little different in that I do not have the laser level/stud finder or the work table and the tool bag looks smaller, but this is as close as to what I have as I could find. My kit included the Radio/charger FS100 Stud Finder The Drill Circular Saw, the Cut Saw Light and Vacuum. But other than that the kits are very similar. I bought four extra batteries and the fast multi-volt charger on E-Bay so in case I ever do get busy with the kit I'll be able to keep it powered. I would say you would have a hard time beating this kit for the performance and price (check E-Bay). Plus it's been fun to play with, and I've read DeWalt builds the Firestorm stuff. I am looking forward to putting it to a real test. But I'm sure it will pass any tests I put it through with flying colors.

5-0 out of 5 stars The tools make the man!
Someone once told me a man is only as good as his tool. Well, when I purchased the Black and Decker 7-tool combo kit I became a man and for a year I was king of the neighborhood. I had become the most respected carpenter in the project. I built four house that year and was going strong as I was branching out my business. Until one night I awoke to find some of my tools missing. I figured I must have left them on a job or something. The next day I searched for them but to no avail. The next night I woke and found the rest of the kit gone. The next night I burned the candle at both ends waiting to find the culprit. I had fallen asleep and felt something tugging at my underwear. I awoke and jump out of my seat when I found little gnomes racing through the house holding my underwear in victory. I pulled my best 007 and tracked them down in the crevices of the basement. There they were singing "We are the tool and underwear gnomes. We need lots of supplies to make it on our way. Big business is a freight train on a path to money right away."
I stood there alone and cold as a breeze went up my pajamas, begging for my atleast my hammer in trade for my silence. They simply told me it was my word, a middle aged working class man, against that of a GNOMES. I guess it was back to the drawling board, without a pen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
The product works great and is easy to assemble. The hardest part is finding out how to put all the tools into the bag. On the first day, I used the circular saw, drill, vacuum, and light. All worked as well as my corded tools. I am a convert to cordless. One nice touch is the power distribution plugs in the front of the bag. My only confusion is why? With cordless tools, do you need more outlets? If they want to improve the product, add another battery and the Radio Battery charger. ... Read more

Cordless convenience is what you'll find with the three-in-one Black & Decker MT1203K-2 12-volt multitool kit. Powered by a rechargeable 12-volt battery pack, the multitool offers three tools--a drill/driver, jig saw, and sander/polisher--in one powerful unit. To change applications, simply switch out one attachment for the next. It's that easy. With the multitool, you don't have to compromise performance for convenience--the tool delivers both, no matter which attachment you use. The drill/driver, for example, offers variable speeds of 0 to 700 rpm, a keyless chuck, an electric brake, and 24 preset torque positions. The jig saw operates at 0 to 3,000 spm and features, among other things, tool-free blade changing, a blade support roller, and a 45-degree bevel for just the right cut. The sander/polisher spins at 0 to 8,000 opm and is compatible with all the attachments and accessories that go with Black & Decker's popular Mouse sander. The whole thing comes housed in an impact-resistant, molded-plastic storage case that can go anywhere with you. --Carl Thress ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Black&Decker Home use 12-volt Multi Tool
Was not used to the slow rate of charge nor how quick the battery depletes when used with the drill. (this is good for battery life though)

Sander is nice to have, saw is o.k.

Overall it is a nice home use unit that gives you some nice choices when it comes to tools. Am happy with the out put of the unit for home use.

Looking for it in 14 volt.........

4-0 out of 5 stars Four years of good light to medium duty jobs
I've owned the Multi-tool for four years, and recently had to replace one of the original batteries. A single battery will last most of the day drilling dry wall srews or wood screws. The Saw will cut 1/2 inche ply-wood and the batteries lasted about an hour each doing so. Recently we've added a room to the back of the house 19'X10' and again the driver did a fine job. Now we are gutting out a closet a bathroom and laundry area and combing them into one large bathroom and again one fully charged battery will last most of the day driving screws. I can't say much about the sander, but the noise level is not an issue. The B&D 12volt Multi-Tool is no louder than any other 12 or 14.4 cordless drill.

1-0 out of 5 stars Show But No Go
This multi-tool set is really pretty, but it is all show and no go. The tools are so heavy and clunky that they are difficult to use. The jig saw has an extra button on the power head that makes it very difficult to use. You actually have to push a button with both hands to get it to work. All of the tools are very noisy and require ear protection to use. The batteries have a very short life and a very long charging time. If you accidentally leave them on the charger it will distroy them. I bought this set for my son for Christmas, but the little elves that built it were obviously not tool makers. I'm sending the whole mess back. No more Black and Decker for me!

1-0 out of 5 stars Great idea but awkward to use
I received the Multi-tool B&D kit and I was encouraged by the concept when I opened this xmas gift. A sander, drill and saw all in one! But when I started to use the Multi-tool I realized this tool is not well engineered. Changing from one tool to the next is clumsy. The tool is way underpowered. In the saw mode, the Multitool bogged down when cutting thin wood! Also this tool is much too loud suggesting poor gear design. I did find the sander handy for corner sanding. Also the drill is good for low torque screwdriving. The final issue I had is how hot this tool gets even in light duty jobs.

My wife will be returning this tool. I prefer dedicated tools that deliver in one application.

4-0 out of 5 stars great starter set
On the whole I have been pleased with the kit. I am not someone who needs to use this tool every weekend, but I have found it to be reliable and convenient. The battery packs are pretty good though I wouldn't start on a project without having both batteries fully charged. The saw and drill are great, but I found the sander to be the least usable of the three. It has been difficult to gauge the sensitivity of the trigger and therefore the speed of the sander, and also found that it drains the batteries quickly. Since sanding is not a 30 second job I would probably use an electric cord sander for larger projects.

Overall great tool for work around the house. ... Read more

Need a reliable straight line without spending a bundle? This is our choice. Granted, this laser’s not self-leveling, but it’s easy to level and does produce a dead-on accurate horizontal or vertical line. It attaches easily to a wall with either the magnetic hanging pin or the included drill anchor wall mounts. Because it’s a single pin hanger, adjustments are as easy as the touch of a finger. Nice storage bag keeps the tool clean and protected. Just the right tool for the homeowner who’s adding a chair rail, wallpaper border, shelving, cabinets, tile, or a host of other projects. You could spend more for a self-leveling unit, but we think this suits most homeowner’s needs.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what you think it is...
"It's my favorite tool" or so I told my kids when they gave it to me for my birthday. In reality, it is a basic laser pointer in a fancy package. Yes, it produces a straight laser line on the wall or floor, but you need to use a manual level to get it correct. It is difficult to hang on the wall and cannot be done without putting a small nail hole in a spot where you probably don't want one. Spend the extra money and buy a better mounting, self leveling and more accurate one if you need things to be absolutely perfect.

1-0 out of 5 stars Door Stop
This is the BIGGEST waste of money there is. I can eye a better level line than this thing. It doesn't give you a level line until you use a real level, to level it???? whats the point??? Save your money. This thing makes a better door stop than a laser level.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great value
This is a great buy for $30.

The basic lazer levels use a single "dot" bean horizontally (as pictured above). The B&D goes one better by making that "dot" a veritcal line with about 30 degrees spread. That means that it will show on the floor and not just something that is raised above the floor.

It makes a great movable chalk line.

The base for mounting it on drywall works well. It has a 2nd one for hard surface where you have to drill a 4-8 mm hole. I have not tried that one, but it appears that it will work.

I can think of many things to improve it such as extending the magnet out (or adding a 3 base) to use directly on metal.

Also the level vials would work better if they where placed on the side and end, rather on the top.

But it is great buy at $30. ... Read more

Hang new kitchen cabinets, tile the bathroom wall, install a border in the baby's room, add shelving to your home office--the Black & Decker BullsEye laser line generator and stud finder is the tool for the job. In fact, the BullsEye is two tools in one. The built-in stud finder works at depths up to 3/4 inches and provides both an LED and alarm indicator to signal when you've reached the edge of a stud. Once you locate the studs in the wall you're working with, you can then hang the BullsEye at the appropriate height using either the included drywall pushpin (for drywall surfaces) or the keyhole insert with a standard screw or nail (for all other surfaces). Activate the self-leveling laser lines, and the built-in pendulum levels the unit automatically. Depending on the light conditions in your work area, the laser lights should be visible up to 10 feet in either direction. No more chalk lines or straight edges. Just a clean, accurate guide for where to place your fasteners. The included target cones are effective up to 50 feet in either direction of the unit, providing an overall work surface of up to 100 feet in length. The BullsEye works best indoors and is intended for the home enthusiast. Professionals will likely want something a bit more versatile (the BullsEye works only on a true horizontal axis, so it can't determine plumb or set a straight line at any other angle).--Carl Thress ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Handy, but not super accurate
This is a really good product idea, but unfortunately mine didn't live up to expectations. My laser level is about an inch out of level over 10 feet. That's probably within building specs, but I figured a product packing a laserbeam would be a lot more accurate.

I have some walls that are 20 feet long. I'd hoped to put this level on the wall and hang a bunch of pictures along a level line, but I can see the few inches of error when I look for it, and that'd drive me nuts.

I only use it for jobs that my spirit level can't span, but that are still under about 10 feet. Anything bigger and I get the chalk line out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool
I love this tool. We built a new house and I used it for hanging curtain rods, verticla blinds, pictures and shelves. Our wall decorations look organized and very stylish. I like the fact that you can mark on the adjacent wall.

We have these shelves for my kids room that are beautiful but are a total nightmare to hang. It took me 3 tries at our previous house to hang them because there is no room for variance. I hung them in 1 try using this tool.

I have read other reviews where people complain about the holes left when hanging the device and it's nonsense. It really is a pin sized hole.

This is the best tool I have purchsed in 10 years because it saves me so much time when doing projects.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not level right out of the box.
I upgraded to this one from the $40 basic one B & D offers due to the fact that the other one dropped an inch at 8 feet. So I mistakenly thought that if I spend more money on the "better" one, I would then get a quality product. Not true. This one dropped a half inch at 4 feet on the right and was pretty close on the left at 4 feet (I don't know why)?!? I'm trying to hang kitchen cabinets and it's impossible with sub-par levels. I chalk this one up to me being cheap and not bucking up for a good one. I am fortunate I can return mine to HD for credit. Some of you may not be so lucky.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stud Finder Works but Laser Level is a bust
We purchased the B&D laser level/stud finder as a Xmas gift for my father-in-law. Unfortunately, the level was a duplicate gift for him with a Craftsman laser level. I got the B&D level as a result. I hung two pictures up side-by-side using the B&D laser level with its "self-leveling" mechanism. Needless to say I have two uneven pictures on the wall. I needed to take out my old level to fix what the laser level messed up. Meanwhile, my father-in-law has nothing but great things to say about the Craftsman.

The stud finder works but for $60+, it's an expensive one. Also, the "wall mounting" feature I feel is misleading. You can mount it to the wall for hands free use only by placing essentially a nail sized pin into the wall for it to hang. Who wants extra holes in the wall?

I've returned the B&D level and hoping no issues with the return from Amazon! The laser level is a useful tool, but it needs to actually work!

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice idea, but too expensive for limited features.
It was the first consumer laser level I'd seen, so I bought it on impulse. It has been handy a few times, but I broke the push pin used to hold it on the wall after only a couple of uses. Not a big deal, just use a thumb tack. The stud-sensor is okay... I've never really found one that consistently works, so my expectations weren't very high. But my biggest gripe is the price. If it did vertical lines, it might be a little more useful, and therefore worth the money. I think I would have been happier buying just a dedicated laser level... ... Read more

Here’s a combo no homeowner should be without. The gel-handled drill doesn’t feel like any other we’ve handled, surpassing our expectations for comfort and ease. Most drills these days have keyless chucks, and this is no exception. We’re impressed with the 24-position clutch and the torque you get for any drilling job. What’s great about this package is the self-leveling BULLSEYE laser level/stud finder. It’s light, compact, easy to use and accurate with a range of 20 feet (10 feet in both directions). For larger jobs like decking and fencing, the target cones will produce a 100-foot line you can rely on. We can imagine hanging shelves without a hassle, laying out tile, putting up a chair rail or wallpaper border and being 100-percent level. The level’s got a neat little gripper on the back, so all you have to do is press it into the wall; the resulting mark is so tiny, it won’t be noticed. The stud finder will locate studs for you, so you know you’re drilling into wood. Priced right for the homeowner and do-it-yourselfer.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars B&D Cordless Drill/Saw Combo
I am not a professional contractor - just a DIY around my own home, so this package was very attractive to me.For the most part, I am pleased with this combo. The tools seem to have adequate power for my needs.I wish the carrying case was smaller - either that or B&D should put wheels and handles on it like the big cases that people wheel through airports. The carrying case is actually larger than my suitcase.

The drill is lightweight and has the power I need for my projects. It has a number of clutches which is nice when using the drill to drive screws and bolts. The drill also has a switch to select between higher speed and higher torque.I have not used this feature but can see that it does make the drill more versatile.

The saw is lightweight and a great size for my needs.I didn't know if I would find a cordless saw to be as convenient and useful as a cordless drill, but I have found it to be very convenient.Because of the size and weight I can use it to make cuts that I would not use my corded circular saw.

The sightline window is very helpful to start a cut but becomes clouded with sawdust as soon as I start cutting so I cannot depend on the siteline window for a long cut.

I am very concerned about the battery life.I charge the battery per the manufacturer's instructions and am only able to cut between nine and ten 2x4's before the saw stops. In addition, the battery charger is a real disappointment in that there is only an indicator light to show a battery is installed and that the charger is plugged in.Per the manufacturer's information, the charger does not default to trickle mode after the battery is charged.Without a charge indicator I can only assume that the manufacturer's instructions are correct and that nine to ten cuts represent a fully charged battery.

If this combo had an improved charger I would likely have overlooked the other shortcomings and given a five-star rating. However, given the widely available technology in low-cost battery chargers, it is my opinion that this is a very significant shortcoming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice kit, but...
This is a very nice kit, but it is one cent cheaper to but the items seperately and you get an extra charger (one in the basement and one in the garage, in my case).I have this kit and the Dewalt 14.4 Volt Drill, I don't think there any difference, except the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Value
I was amazed to find this saw/drill combo set for less than I almost bought the Dewalt saw alone for a couple of years ago.I already have a Bosch 12V cordless drill but bought this combi-pack instead of the saw alone because of the extra battery and case that came with it.It was likegetting the drill for free.

The saw and drill are very sturdy...perhapsjust a titch less durable feeling then their Dewalt counterparts.Thedrill is heavier than my Bosch and doesn't feel quite as solid (the plasticbody has more flex.)

The drill has torque to spare and the saw ripsthrough boards with ease.I'm very pleased with their functionality.

Iwas, however, dissapointed in the supplied charger. It is a dumb tricklecharger that takes 6 hours to charge the battery and has no type ofauto-off safety feature whatsoever. My advice is to throw it away BEFOREyou damage a battery pack which you will inevitably do when you accidentlyleave it plugged in for a couple of days.I immediately ordered the DewaltDW9116 1 hour charger (I read in another customers reviewthat the batteries are compatible with the Dewalt 14.4V's.)Consideringthe replacement packs cost about that much it was easily worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional Without the Price
I use this set on the job site constantly. It sits in my trunk ready to be used. I have used it alongside some of the supposed "Professional Grade" brands and it holds up better than most, and still costs halfas much. I have a lot of power tools, but this one is by far my favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff
I bought this set and found out it's the neatest thing I've ever put in my garage. The drill will handle a 1/16 bit or a 1/2 inch with equal ease, and drives screws better than the "professional" stuff our plantmaintenance uses. The saw goes through plywood and 2X4's as well as my 115volt big saw. Highly reccomended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine drill/driver and under $100.00
I've read some reviews that sat the chuck on the drill can't hold a bit at all and its only real use is as an 18-volt screwdriver. I've run a 1/2 bit to the hilt into a 4X4 several times just to test it, and there was no slippage at all. The drill and two batteries that come with this set are worth the $99.00 and the radio/trickle charger is an added bonus. I would say that 280 lbs of torque is plenty for most applications, but have to admit that I am a novice and use it as a household tool. I've only had it about a month but have played around with it, and am very impressed with it when compared to other 18 volt drill/drivers out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's just plain, clean and simple!
As a die-hard Van Halen fan, I was thrilled to hear about the new Black & Decker 18-Volt FireStorm Drill with Radio Charger.

I've always enjoyed holding my drill up to my guitar and mimicking the intro to the excellent Van Halen song, "Poundcake", but my wife got tired of listening to me practice while listening to the song on our stereo in the living room.

The Black & Decker 18-Volt FireStorm Drill with Radio Charger allows me to jam with Eddie Van Halen and the boys in the comfort of my garage. I plug my Eddie Van Halen model Peavey Wolfgang guitar in, remove the drill from the radio charger, wait for "Poundcake" to be played by one of the local radio stations, close my eyes and, "Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer! Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer-reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer-reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer!" -- it's "Poundcake" time.

The drill also does an outstanding job of drilling. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I thought this was a POWER tool
I wish there was a review of this item available before i bought it. The power behind this tool is extremely lacking to the point that there were some screws that were too much for it to drive but even my 10 year old daughter could screw in with a regular screwdriver. A serious waste of money.

1-0 out of 5 stars nice design but no power

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Tool for Tight Places
I had a choice of cutting some trim in a tight spot or removing it entirely to do the cuts. I found this saw and it did the trick. I was able to cut the trim under the eaves without removing each piece. The saw provided plenty of power for this job, so much so, I went ahead and used it to cut some other trim on the saw horse. I recommend getting one of these if you can find it. I got mine at do-it-best lumber.

1-0 out of 5 stars Craftsman version of this tool...
Craftsman version of this tool :Blade is too thin and bends. It won't cut a straight line

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for jobs around the house.
I've bought this machine, because of its light weight and handy size.Biggest suggestion go and get the carbide bit blades. They cut fast and give more power to the unit. The blade that comes with the machine will quit on 3/4" laminated wood, while it still works great on 3/4" pine boards.Get the extra "Gold" power packs, because they last 60% longer. I've build racks for CD's with this machine.I've cut up to 1" with ease.It produces clean and delicate cuts while your arms will not get tired, unlike the big 7 1/4" circular saw I have.Overall, it's a great machine for hobby builders.

4-0 out of 5 stars good saw
I have had this saw for 2+ year now and this is an ok saw for cutting wood with the standard blade but I strongly recomend buying a carbide blade and tossing the standard one because it cuts 100 times faster and the battary last longer. The bottom line is that this saw is good for short cuts (because it is hard to keep strait on long cuts with out a strait edge) 1/2" plywood or less, expecialy luan. P.S. I read that this saw was originaly desinged to cut veneers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dang!
OK, my wife, Rachel, was fixing a cabinet. she needed to use my drill so i let her. when she was drilling, she got a phone call about her mother who had died. She was so distracted that she forgot she was still drilling when the drill couldnt turn anymore. she held it there for about 3 minutes! After i came home, she was still on the phone with the drill in the wall when i reminded her. That drill was so dead after that! The motor got so hot too. So the final day of that drill, i was hanging a picture, when the motor gave up with a puff of light smoke. I dont know why. It wasnt in use that day. Next i bought another one promising that i would never let her use it without supervision. I baught her one too. She loves it even more. So we are happy! .... < Email address 4 comments

4-0 out of 5 stars a great drill for the weekend warrior
this is a great drill for the light user

however

if you are into heavy duty drilling

you might want to look elsewhere

the batteries have enough charge for my light use

but

if you are driving screws all day long

this is not the drill for you

the price is very nice as well

1-0 out of 5 stars Spend your money wisely...not here
This was my first cordless drill and my last Black & Decker cordless drill. The main problem with this drill is that it does not have enough power! It strains setting screws and after a handfull of screws the batteries are spent. Also my set came with only 2 batteries; therefore, when the batteries are drained you have to wait several hours before you can use the drill again.Who has time for that!Sure I could buy 2 more batteries so that I always have 2 in the drill and 2 in the charger, but by the time I pay for all that I could buy a more powerful drill with 2 sets of batteries included. My other major problem with this drill is that bits become loose in the chuck over time and fall out of the drill when the drill is pointed down. This is not fun when you are on a ladder.I recommend this drill only for the lightest of tasks such as setting half inch screws in drywall.I now own a 14.4v Milwaukee 0516-22 cordless drill and I am extremely satisfied.I know this drill cost more but is very worth it.I know some people may say that a 14.4 volt drill with 390 in-lbs of torque may be overkill for a weekend home improvement guy, but these same people probably go to the mall in a 4X4 SUV with a 6.0 liter engine.

2-0 out of 5 stars Decent tool for small jobs, but mine is in the trash
The batteries don't hold much charge. I have done several small projects, but always had to wait 24hrs for the battery to charge. On a recent flooring project, the battery would die after 15-20 holes through hard lumber. Good for small projects, but please consider a better alternative if you need power and running time.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Gifts I've Ever Received!
The Black & Decker Cordless drill is one of the best gifts I've ever received. As I received it as a gift, I just thought it was a cordless screwdriver. But, by buying a set of drill bits, you can change it into a cordless drill, too.A standard screwdriver/phillips screwdriver bit can be stored right on the top of the drill (& it snaps into place - very handy!).Trying to find an outlet within reach for a drill with a cord in order to do home-improvement projects used to be a real hassle. Now I can do many home-improvement projects on my own!The screwdriver function is also excellent.Good for:tightening screws, drilling starter holes for nails & screws, loosening & tightening screws on light fixtures, etc., The VersaPak system works very well & the batteries are easy to uninstall, recharge & reinstall.A red light on the recharger pack shows when the batteries are recharging. The storage case holds everything (except the drill bits), but you almost need a tool to get the case open!I still use the original case anyway, but obviously an extra case could be purchased, if necessary. ... Amazon.com Review

The Black & Decker PivotDriver two-position screwdriver is great either in the workshop or to have around home for projects that require quite a bit of screwdriving. This tool is super easy to use and locks in two positions--in-line or pistol-grip--for installing cabinet hardware or tightening screws, say, under a counter or in any other hard-to-reach place where you'd bang your knuckles with an ordinary screwdriver. Toggling between forward and reverse is easy with the rocker switch, while the automatic spindle lock allows you to manually start screws or finish them without stripping or overtightening. The narrow nosepiece also gives you added reach when installing hardware in tight spots.

The PivotDriver runs off the VersaPak battery system, which is interchangeable with all Black & Decker VersaPak products. The battery is easy to remove--just press the button near the bottom of the screwdriver. The 1.2 amp, 3.6-volt battery produces enough torque and run time for any basic household project. --Dori Anvinson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Companion to Cordless Drill
Santa Claus left this screwdriver in my stocking for Christmas. I want to thank the reviewer from Hamilton, OH for the heads up on this product's design flaw. I will be very careful not to rotate the battery, and thus break off the recessed contact, when inserting it into the handle. That is why this rates only 4 stars. Otherwise, I find this tool to be a helpful companion to my 6.0 volt Black & Decker drill. Now, I don't have to stop and change from a drill bit to a driver bit when intalling screws. It has more power than I anticipated, and its slower than expected speed is good for maintaining control in tight places. I've used this screwdriver to hang electrical boxes in the attic, and run drywall screws into 1/4" plywood sheating. I like having this power in my hand to grab screws at odd angles and run them in quickly when I am in an awkward posision and cannot turn a hand screwdriver easily with one hand. Just remember to remove and cap the battery before tossing the tool back into your tool tote. Since there is no locking mechanism, the trigger can be pushed by other tools and run the power down.

5-0 out of 5 stars A skeptic no more
At first I was reluctant to purchase a cordless screwdriver; I already owned a perfectly fine cordless drill which had served admirably as a driver for many years. When I finally broke down and bought the Black & Decker PivotDriver (for reasons I cannot explain), I was quite pleasantly surprised by how beautifully it worked, and by how much better suited it was to driving screws than my drill ever was. It quickly became one of my favorite tools.

I am unlikely to ever again use my cordless drill as a driver, and here is why: First, the PivotDriver is much lighter and smaller, making it effortless to hold and maneuver. Second, its handle can be locked into two different positions, unlike most drills, which have a fixed pistol-grip configuration. It's great being able to switch between the two positions instantly, as one or the other is frequently more comfortable or offers greater maneuverability. Third, the spindle automatically locks when the button is released, turning it into a conventional screw driver. This is useful for really tough screws, or those that require a gentle touch. Finally, both forward and reverse are conveniently located on the "trigger", which makes a lot of sense for a screw driver (but not for a drill).

I am also impressed by the amount of torque delivered by this small device. It can handle some really difficult screws. I recently installed about a dozen metal braces in my house (part of seismic retrofitting), each one requiring between 8 and 20 screws in some rather hard and difficult-to-reach wood. The PivotDriver made it almost trivial. Go ahead, ask me if I'm a fan of cordless screw drivers.

The PivotDriver uses a "VersaPak" 3.6 Volt rechargeable battery; the driver comes with a charger and one such battery. The battery that is included is silver, but you should know that it also comes in a gold version. The gold batteries are *much* better than the silver ones; they hold a charge longer and pack a little extra punch. (Love that torque!) These batteries (both silver and gold) can also be used in numerous other cordless tools offered by both Black & Decker and Sears (aka Craftsman). They are very light-weight and easy to pop in and out. They take up to six hours to charge, however.

At the risk of sounding sexist, allow me to offer some advice to the ladies. If you're looking for a great practical gift for hubby, look no further. It's true; for some mysterious reason guys really do love cordless screw drivers, and this one is a beaut. To really impress him, after he's opened it and thanked you profusely, casually say "I almost got you the ______ version, but I thought you would appreciate having at least 25 foot-pounds of torque." He'll see you in a whole new light. (You can fill in the blank with any other brand name.)

Few things these days seem to be truly well designed, durable, and inexpensive. This little gem is all three. Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great electric screwdriver
The key to buying Black and Decker products (including this product and the dustbuster), is to make sure that your product uses the versa packs batteries. Versa Pack batteries make it easy to replace the batteries when they die.

This is a great screwdriver and has versa pack. What more need I say?

2-0 out of 5 stars It's great when it works - but its not very durable
I've gone through two of the Pivot Drivers in as many years and am looking for something that will hold up better. I use the Pivot Driver occasionally for odd jobs around the house - nothing heavy. The pivot feature is great, as is the versa-pack compatibility, but the electrical connections are flimsy.

The first Pivot Driver I had fell off a work-bench or something else I was working on and worked only intermitently after that. The second one now also functions only intermitently although I'm not sure exactly when it fell to it's demise. I can sometimes get it to work by knocking it on something but I'd rather have one which didn't pivot and worked all the time!

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected
I guess my initial presumption was that this tool wouldn't be much use - especially considering I picked it up for ...[an undisclosed dollar amount] from Home Depot. How wrong I was!
I have found the torque of the tool more than adequate for small simple things. Having recently had a baby, this tool is invaluable for continually changing batteries on baby toys that are always locked down with a screw. Also, I have found the tool great for work I do on my PC. It has helped me in the replacement of hard drives and CD burners. I also appreciate the fact that you can place the shaft at an angle for certain work - most helpful.
In regard to the battery issue in other reviews, I have always removed the battery after use so I have never had this problem. I have also found the battery life as more than adequate. ... Read more

Sleek, lightweight and powerful (especially for a cordless unit), the Black & Decker 14.4V FireStorm cordless drill kit is designed to make quick work of most everyday drilling and driving needs. The FireStorm powers through masonry, wood or steel. The unit features an adjustable torque collar with 36 settings and delivers up to 235 in./lbs. of torque. A two-position gear box offers variable speeds of 0-300 and 0-1,100 rpm. The Quick Connect Bit Change System allows you to work with two bits at once, a real timesaver when drilling pilot holes for screws; while the built-in level indicator makes it easy to keep those holes straight and clean. The drill rests comfortably in the hand and is insulated for added safety. A trigger lock-off helps prevent accidental startup. Spring-loaded batteries are easy to remove and lock securely into place. And onboard bit storage provides added convenience.--Carl Thress ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Firestorm FSD142
I bought the Black&Decker FSD142 a month ago and all I can say is, "WOW" This is the best power tool I've ever bought! The Quick Connect chuck is the best thing since... yes sliced bread :) It saves a lot of time from going from Drill to Screw. If your looking to buy a cordless drill with plenty of power I say buy the Firestorm 14.4 volt FSD142, You won't be disappointed!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this product
I agree with other reviewers - this drill is worthless because the chuck won't hold a bit. I like the concept and I got a great deal on it ($62) but in the end I took it back because A DRILL THAT WON'T HOLD A BIT IS WORTHLESS. I ended up getting a 12 volt Bosch and I am much happier now - more expensive, but I find the single-handed locking chuck just as easy to swap bits as with the Firestorm setup and I know I have a much better quality product. I have yet to find a Black and Decker product that is worthwhile and probably never will, since I am done ever purchasing their stuff. Also, this is coming from a weekend hobbyist doing home improvment projects and not from a professional contractor.

First of all I went through 4 different B&D drills before I swore off the whole line.

If you need a cordless screwdriver and that is absolutly it, then these are ok drills, but they are useless as a drill. The chuck can't be hand tightened enough to make it usefull for standard drill bits. As soon as there is any resistance the bit just free spins in the chuck. The only way around this is to get all hex end bits so that the chuck teeth have multiple edges to grab to.

Battery life was another problem I had with the B&D drills. It would put in a bunch of screws but when I tried to drill a hole in a pine 2x4 it would die out after just 2-3 holes. Not exactly usefull when I'm trying to drill pilot holes.

The last straw when when I bought a 14.4 model and it would only spin in reverse (the direction pin was broken)...

I now own a 18v Skil and couldn't be happier.. for only 10$ more I got a more powerful drill (when I set it to high torque it allmost dislocated my arm) with 2 batteries and a chuck that will actually hold a standard bit.

The quick disconnect chuck is a good "idea." Unfortunantly the present design is flawed. The chuck cannot hold a drill bit to save it's life. Apply any pressure and the drill bit will simply spin in the chuck. Power is average. Battery life is'nt bad if you can get the rapid charger to work properly. If you do any serious project you need buy a lot of batteries and use the snail charger. I am presently returning my 5th rapid charger. I even bought them from different stores to see if maybe it was a bad batch of chargers sent to one store. Nope. Same problem, they work for a few days and slowly charge less and less until the battery is shot and the charger blinks endlessly whether it has a battery in it or not.

Made in china, wouldn't have it. They need to bring it back home. You can use this if you want, makes no difference to me. I'm not the only one that feels this way. There is too much manufacturing going to china for the sake of a dollar. One day the US will pay dearly for this loss. ... Read more
