Buy it for looks don't buy it for life/performance
I purchased this grill at Kmart at a discount (under $300) about three months ago. The grill appealed to me for its partial stainless steel construction and enclosed under-body. It was easy to assemble and most parts appeared to be of solid construction. Unfortunately, problems appeared immediately after the first use. Namely, the pan designed to capture grease and other particles did not do a good job. Grease is leaking into the cabinet and onto my porch despite proper installation and grill standing on a perfect level surface. Also, the construction of the grill causes frequent and large flare-ups. Most of the flare-ups occur in the far section of the crates, where cross-ignition tubes trap dripping grease. In addition, the cooking surface temperature is highly uneven with much hotter temperatures at the far end of the crates (even when flare-ups are not causing it). On the plus side, electronic ignition system works beautifully so far.
Bottom line is; I would not purchase it again despite attractive looks. ... Read more

Mine served me well
I got one of these grills as a hand-me-down from my cool big brother (who graduated to a plumbed natural-gas grill). Though it had a few years on it when I got it, the char-broil served me well. It cooked smoothly and evenly, didn't consume too much gas, and was the focus of many a happy day of outdoor cooking. It finally fell prey to rust at a ripe old age. It was replaced with a Kenmore, which has never been quite so satisfying, despite being more rust-resistant.

PS: Never buy a grill with a side-burner. They are darn near worthless.

Nice, affordable grill
This was the first gas grill I have purchased, having always used charcoal grills. My family has really enjoyed using this grill - so much faster than charcoal. We have had minimal flare-ups with this grill, it cooks evenly and is fairly easy to clean. I have seen this grill at a cheaper price offline, but in researching prices online, Amazon beat other stores hands down. i BOUGHT A CHARBOIL 4637330 from Wal mart. It came with out a guide or parts manuel. I need one bad so please womeone wend me one at Allen Lang, 6779 Highway 86 w, Carrollton, Al 35447. I don't have all my parts and need some way to get them for this new grill.

Not bad for the $$$
Had this grill for almost 5 years. had to replace the cooking grills three times. The cover lasted 3 years. cooking side to side not easy to cook at different temps. If you bought from costco and have reciept, take it back. The new stainless is only $100 more. Good luck!! ... Read more

After half a season, the plastic handle, plastic preparation surface, electronic ignition and cooking grates either weathered to the point of not being able to be used, or broke outright. Replacement parts are very hard to find.
Will not buy another Char-Broil item again.

Great grill for too much money
I purchased this identical grill last year, except for the sideburner grate was different and the "whatever" caddy on the front did not come with mine. I paid [$$] for the grill( on sale ) and the tank combined. Basically it's still the very same gas grill. The Thermos boys have slapped their name plate on it also. Any Joe can put their tag on it, however, it doesn't compromise the great outdoor cookin'.

I have no complaints from this grill as of yet. Well only one. The top rack of the two tiered hood rack kept slipping out of the hole on the right side. Remedy: find the adequate size split washer to crimp on, squeeze on with the ol' pliers. It's still holding.

I wouldn't want any other grill. So pleased with this lower priced model. I believe the perfect fish, game or poultry depends on the cook, not the equipment. But descent grills help a ton.

This weekend I'm attempting to smoke a turkey breast. God help me! I purchased two smoker boxes and an expandable ceramic grate at [a local store], 'twas the perfect fit for the grate into my grill. I tried it out on the store floor model that was like mine. It rested on the walls as well as the splatter guard of the burner unit. Better to do it there than have to return it...right?

Your best cooking comes from trial and error. You may need to modify your grill for the like...well you paid for it, so you can do what you want to the beast.

Tip of the day: If you think the ignitor is shucking out on you, try this--push it in slow. A few days ago I was [ticked] that it took the ignitor 7 to 10 times to ignite. I bought a replacement. Before I hooked up the new one I tested the old one by pushing it in slowly. It worked 3 out of 3 times that I tried it on the first push.

great grill cooks well works great. The handle is metal and let me tell you how hot that handle gets even when on low. I have to use a pot holder to open it up and it only gets worse when cooking on high. This item needs a new handle and should be recalled.

I give this cover 3 stars for looks, although further investigation at other web sites shows that it's a vinyl cover, and not canvas as the picture above suggests. I can't review the cover itself because I never received it. The order page says it will ship in 3 to 5 weeks. However, my mom ordered this item as a gift for me in December 2003, and it has been repeatedly delayed. Great Grill!
Great grill that goes both ways... Nice and big, very even heating. Have used it for about 2 weeks straight! Not one problem.

Don't buy unless your homeowners insurance is paid up...
First, the good news:
While this grill was not trivial to assemble, CharBroil did helpfully include a large sheet of white paper to set the tiny parts on, so they do not fall in between your deck boards. Quite a nice, thoughtful touch.

After assembly, I hauled the included tank to the gas station, and had them fill 'er up. I performed all the required leak tests when getting home, but did not use it for a couple of weeks.

Yesterday, I fired it up for the first time and started letting it preheat. That went just fine. I then went inside to start getting out the hot dogs I wanted to grill. After a couple of minutes, my wife came to inform me that the grill was smoking and flames were poofing out the side. I figure this is just finish smoking some, and she is overreacting. My mistake. I get there just in time to watch a jet of Liquid Propane shoot out of the side of the regulator assembly that attaches to the tank. I of course immediately shut off the burners, scooted the grill to the other side of the deck and shut the tank valve while I waited for the puddle of explosive propane to boil off. Quite an exciting few seconds. I can only imagine what would have happened if the leak was pointed at the hot bottom of the grill instead of the ground.

What I figured happened is that the regulator seals were good enough to seal at room temperature. However, when the regulator was chilled by the actual flow of propane (something that does not happen in a static leak test), the metal contracted, the rubber lost elasticity, and the seals failed catastrophically. Think Challenger.

While this defect may have been a random fluke, I will definately have the fire extinguisher handy when I have the replacement part in hand. If that leaks too, back to the hardware store it goes.

UPDATE:
The replacement part leaked too. CharBroil then told me that oops, it must be that my tank is overfilled. I had it weighed, and nope, that wasn't it either. When they told me I must have a defective tank, I gave up on CharBroil trying to fix it. Too many guesses for me. This was after several weeks of trying in vain to get a callback. Luckily [the store] took it back over two months after I bought it without a hassle.

As a side note, as I was disassembling it to fit in my brother's SUV for the trip back to the store, I noticed that several parts were already rusting after only 2 1/2 months, all of it under a grill cover. What an unmitigated piece of junk, backed by truly pathetic service. ... Read more

Very good for the price
I had a Sunbeam grill that I hated. I replaced the burners so many times, I could do it with my eyes closed. Then I needed new grates and couldn't find any that were a direct fit. I bought some adjustable grates and wired them together to make do. Finally, I had enough. I saw this Char-Broil (actually it was the previous incarnation of this model) at a Home Depot and bought it without a second thought. Knowing the experience I'd had with the Sunbeam, I also bought a spare burner.

It was not a relationship that started out beautifully. It was 102 degrees by the thermometer in my backyard when I opened the box. There were no instructions for assembly. I took out all the parts and thought, "How hard can it be. It doesn't require tools." But I couldn't figure it out. So I called the 800 number for Char-Broil customer assistance. If the temperature wasn't hot enough already, talking to three morons at this number made the mercury rise even more. Absolutely no customer assistance whatsoever. While I held on for an eternity as one of the service representatives tried to find some type of reference material, I finally realized there were parts missing from the box. So I called Home Depot and they told me to bring it back. They exchanged the grill for one already assembled.

That was the only bad experience I've had with this grill. It has continued to work well for the last three years. The igniter died in short order (to be expected, after all) but I'm about to begin my fourth summer cooking on this grill and it still has the original burner installed and the spare has never been out of the box. I use it year-round. It's left outside in a sheltered area. It doesn't get a whole lot of attention. It continues to cook right on along. In the past week, I've done a brisquet, a pot roast and a few burgers.

I prefer to cook on charcoal or to use an offset firebox smoker with charcoal and wood coals. But having a gas grill is convenient, requires less set-up and less clean-up. There's not a lot of refinement to this model Char-Broil. It's relatively cheap and kind of ugly. But it has proven to be reliable and easy to use for a number of years.
