Buyer beware! I purchased this for myself on the 28th of December. Used it on the 29th. Returned it on the 29th. I would have given this item a zero rating, but Amazon does not offer that rating.

Although it looks like a good deal (especially since B&D's parent/associate company is DeWalt), but this children's toy is made of pure junk. After I tried the hammer setting, I spent the next fifteen minutes trying to figure out why it sounded as if the gears inside were self-destructing. Apparently that sound is 'normal'. I've used a couple contractor grade hammer drills & none I've used before ever sounded this bad.

When put to hard use, the gears that drive the chuck & bit randomly disengage, leaving the motor spinning at full speed, but not drilling. Just as randomly as the chuck stops spinning, it starts spinning again with the cacophony of gears being turned into bits of metal dust.

I have not yet purchased a new hammerdrill to replace this yet, but I plan on puchasing the Bosch or Milwaukee H/D's that are similar in features.

When I returned this to the big box hardware store (H.D.), the customer service rep said that she has had more of these B&D hammerdrills returned than any other power tool in the store... ... Read more

Disposable but comes with batteries
I actually use this thing ALL the time. It's super light-weight and handy for all sorts of SMALL projects. So why only 2 stars?

First, the manufacturer claims that you can scroll cut 1-inch and cut up to 2-inch wood. They have got to be kidding. About the most I would recommend would be 3/8" wood. 1/8" to 1/4" is more its comfort zone. The batteries wouldn't even last through cutting a single 2-by-4 (which is only 1-1/2" on a side) assuming you had the patience. Yes, I have a big recip saw.

Cutting anything large you will run into its first serious flaw. If you break a blade off, most likely, you cannot remove the broken-off part. Trust me, I took the entire thing apart, cut, pounded, and filed before I realized this. Thus, my first one went in the trash after about 3 uses. Lesson: You have to be especially sensitive to blade dimensions. For example, the DeWalt blades (ironically = Black and Decker) are a few thousandth's thicker and won't ever come out if you break them off. This leaves you with trying to find blades on the small side.

Starting with my second one of these tools, I have been especially careful about blades, but I have not found a good manufacturer of undersized shank blades. As a result, I go through blades like crazy.

The next major flaw with this tool is that the gearbox is a simple worm gear with a peg in it. Sawdust and especially drywall dust will mix in with the grease in the gear and jam it up. Then it's take-apart time, again.

Another weakness is that the safety is much more difficult to press than the trigger. It's also in an awkward position which causes a lot of fatigue and sore hands. I remove the trigger on mine which is significantly more dangerous, but significantly less difficult to use.

Finally, like all the VersaPak tools, the batteries do have memory and only last a few years.

As a result, after using several of these for several years, I give it 2 stars. It is an incredibly handy tool, but unfortunately, no one makes a quality "micro-SawZall" which is what this really is. The saving point for this otherwise poor product is that it comes with 2 batteries which are worth about twenty bucks, so the real cost of this tool is also about twenty bucks which is a little more consistent with its durability.

For it's intended purpose, it's great
IF you use this tool for its intended purpose, it works perfectly. We call this a "drywall tool" and it is mainly used for cutting outlet boxes in drywall, but also for light cutting duties like door framing, small crafts works (we used it to build a bird box), and other assorted items. I don't think the claim by the manufacturer that it is for outdoor use with trees and branches is very valid though - it is a reciprocating saw, and moves the branches too much while cutting. The batteries seem to work fine and hold their charge, at least until you start to punish the saw with heavier, thicker woods, then it peters out. We used this saw once to cut patterns in some shelving wood that was pretty thick, and halfway through the job we had to switch to a corded jig saw to finish the job.

It is light, easy to handle, and for its intended uses (drywall, small wood cutting, detail cutting) it is pretty much perfect.

Light weight and versatile
I have used this several times to do small projects like cutting out cat doors and holes in furniture for electrical cables. The saw works great. However the batteries don't hold the charge as long as they promise and the chargers are starting to go flaky. You have to stick your finger in the charging unit to manipulate the anodes and diode positions. So be sure the saw is ready before preparing to use it.

Decent Small Reciprocating Saw
This is a decent small reciprocating power saw. I've had one for a few years. It's useful for apartment dwellers and homeowners who may do occasional small fix-up projects. It's great for cutting holes in drywall for electrical switches, outlets, etc (I used it a lot when installing a home theater system last year). The portability is a real plus for this type of work. I've also used it to cut wood, metal, and plastic. Not a pro tool, but could be handy for drywall installers.

Little projects
This is not a replacement for a real saw, and I don't think it was made to be. It cuts short and thin peices of wood 2X4's, but is no match for a longer piece of wood. And about cutting tree branches, it's a recroprating blade, so the branch ends up moving with the blade and not cutting. I actually do use it quite frequently, but still lug out my curcular saw if I'm making more than 2 cuts in something.

I have had the very same problem that others listed.After a few years of use, the on switch just refuses to stay in the on position.What horrible quality!!!

Won't buy Black & Decker again
I had the same problem as others did.After about 2 years, the iron won't stay on in the upright (veritical) position.It turns off.It stays on in the horizontal position, while ironing, as long as the cord doesn't jiggle.As soon as you set it down to move clothing, it clicks and shuts off.The steam was good on the iron.....but I will NOT buy another Black & Decker iron again !!!

My SteamXpress 680 is fabulous!
I looked up this iron to tell my mom the model number, as she has had one bad iron after another and I am recommending this one to her. I am so surprised to see these negative reviews, I guess that most people who are pleased with their product don't feel the need to post a positive statement! So I will speak up in this iron's defense.We have used this exact iron for 2 1/2 years.It has never leaked, it warms up instantly and steams like a champ.And I must add that I have dropped the iron probably about 20 times over 2 1/2 years, and the only thing that happens is the blue knob falls off, but it snaps right back on.Other than that it continues to work perfectly. So I definitely describe it as durable and recommend it!

This is not a durable product
This iron is such a waste.I have had it for about a year and it worked fine.All of a sudden, the on switch stopped working.In order to iron, you have to shake the iron, wait for the light to come on, hold the on switch, hope that it will heat up and iron while holding the switch. That is way too much work in order to ironIt has an automatic turn off, but it hardly works. It doesn't have a steam button, either.Just a spray button which you have to push several times.DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!!!

Nix the Velcro, Black & Decker!
I am an avid woodworker and use my Mouse on a daily basis. The only problem I have with this sander is that if you, like me, change sanding pads frequently - either from heavy use or to change to a finer/coarser grit sand paper - you will find that the velcro adhesive comes apart from the base. I tried gluing the velcro back on, which works as long as I don't change pads again. Once I change the sandpaper out, no matter how careful I am to hold the velcro while pulling the sandpaper off, the velcro still will not stay.

I have considered buying a different detail sander, but do like the Mouse for its lightness and orbiting features. The Mouse's size also enables me to get into smaller areas, which helps with the type of woodworking I do. Because of the positive features, I have settled into a compromise with the beast. I no longer have the velcro on the Mouse at all, but use adhesive sandpaper which I put directly onto the cushioned pad where the velcro used to sit. I have to trim the sandpaper to the correct size and shape, but it works just as well. If it weren't for the velcro pad not holding up, I'd give this little sander five stars.

I Hope It's Not Being Discontinued in Favor of Mega Mouse
I bought this sander primarily as an inexpensive detail sander. I figured that I'd have to resort to using the "finger" base plate, but have found that the steam iron shape allows great access to corners and tight spaces. Does a good job at (quietly and without a lot of vibration) smoothing out paint between coats and doing fine finish work. If you need to remove a lot of material (i.e.: very rough or very large surface), I'd recommend a random orbit sander, 1/# sheet, or belt sander.

The case is convenient, as it holds a lot of supplies. It is not, however, what I'd call heavy duty.

The sander does go thru sandpaper quickly. I agree with other reviewers--I'd be nice to be able to buy it in bulk.

I see this sander less and less in stores; I hope that B&D is not discontinuing this product in favor of the Mega Mouse. That might make finding supplies for the Mouse more difficult.

Really good - except
I've had my mouse for about a year. For the most part, it's had very light use. Recently, I started using it more and it's had moderate use this summer.

It fits my hand nicely, is friendly in terms of ease of use but the hooks on the pad have worn down to nothing. The sandpaper simply won't stick. I'm pretty disappointed since I'm in the middle of two projects I'd like to finish up before the rainy season begins. And it's had light use.

I've tried to find a new "interchangeable pad" for the regular tear drop sandpaper but there don't seem to be any. So I'm faced with purchasing another mouse or trying something else. The motor seems fine so I'm reluctant to buy a whole tool when it just needs a $5 part.

Also, the Black and Decker sandpaper wears very quickly. Fortunately, there are other makes of hook and loop sandpaper and these have been much more satisfactory.

Excellent for small jobs
Lightweight and versatile little tool.

I concur with all the positive reviews here but must point out that B&D's supplied sandpaper is little use. You'll need a quality brand from Home Depot or the like. Makes short work of any small area. I'd recommend something larger is you do a lot of sanding but this is perfect for most home users.

Don't like it - velcro wears off and then it's useless
The first mouse I got (as a gift - I asked for it) had its motor go bad after just a few uses. I exchanged it for another. Then on the next one, after just a few uses, the velcro loops are wearing off on the tip, making the sander effectively useless as it now doesn't hold the sandpaper in place. I need to get a new pad with the velcro loops, but you can't get it at any store - I've got to order directly from the manufacturer (haven't tried yet but I have their #).

I'd advise against any sander that uses velcro as an attachment system. I hear that glue & self-stick systems also have problems, but they can't be as bad as making the sander completely useless. ... Read more

Do not recommend
The iron worked fine for a couple of weeks, it irons OK, is good weight. At the end of the 2nd week, then the plastic handle you are supposed to hold to retract the cord, broke. Without it, the cord is can not be retracted. One other issue I have with it is water spills - whenever you change the position of the iron from vertical to horizontal. Water and B&D Scrubbers don't mix
How does one scrub without water? Darned hard, I say. I use the mouse to scrub a working sink, and while it works well and gets stains out, the rubber plate to which the scrubber attaches continuously comes off the tool when wet. The store graciously replaced the entire unit, but it happened again the next time I scrubbed. A little super-glue was all it took for the pad to stay on. Now...why can't they do that at the manufacturer? Otherwise, a powerful little scrubber, if you're willing to put up with peeling corners and such. ... Read more

Paper cost exceeds Mouse cost after 5 purchases
I wish I'd read the posts warning about the cost of the paper before I bought the Mouse. It's a very useful little tool, and it's easy to think of uses for it. Unfortunately, each use means a trip to the store for paper or pads. The paper is horribly expensive, and it's not feasible to substitute for it. I've used my Mouse on only about a dozen minor projects over the last year but have easily spent 3X the original cost of the unit on paper and pads.

Sander good, paper too expensive and hard to find
This is a useful and well-made sander, but it only uses Black and Decker paper that costs [a lot of money] for 5 sheets (if you can even find the paper - it is here on Amazon.com, but usually is hard to find at a hardware store), making it too expensive to use a lot. Orbital sanders with standard size disks or palm sanders that use 1/4 sheets of regular sandpaper are much more economical - about one tenth the cost. It has performed well the times I used it, but I almost never use it due to the expensive paper (that lasts no longer than other paper - you will use up several sheets on a small project).

The Mouse is the best small sander
The Mouse is a great sander for small use. It is easy to switch diffferent grit paper all u have to do is aline the paper to the mouse and press down. I just got it and boy does it do a great job. I love it. I am 14 years old and it is so easy to use it isn't that noisey either. The Black&Decker drill 04A (with 1350 rpm) operates with brushes against the motor. When they wear out parts like these are hard to find - if not impossible. The drill is two years old and has performed beautifully until now and I cannot find the part that is worn out...

Good for home
I got this tool for Christmas 2001 and I've used it a lot. I have used it for a variety of home repair uses and found it to be very well suited for those projects such as furniture assembly, hanging curtain rods, hanging blinds, bathroom fixtures such as towel racks, hanging flower boxes with larger screws into my home. Batteries work fine and last a reasonable time. I have not tried anything super heavy duty. I am very pleased witht this and plan to buy one for my sister as a house warming gift. It is heavy enough for everything I've tried but light enough to be easy to handle.

Not enough drill for a serious home repair person,
I bought this after Christmas and was snagged by the price. Only Craftman comes close to this price for a 12v.

I needed to drill and torque down a banister. After charging both batteries (over 6 hours for both). I started on the project but the drill lacked the needed torque for the lag bolts and the batteries were quickly depleted and needed another charage.

The real issue of a serious drill is torque and "Durability" of the battery(s)... With this B&D the battery charge took a very long time and then the batteries were not, using the definition for "durable" > "able to exist for a long time without significant deterioration".

IF you are a serious a serious home repair person spend the extra [price] and move up to B&D 14.4volt Firestorm Drill - both torque and battery durablity will be significantly better. ... Read more
